Weak decay of  in nuclear medium FCPPL-2015, USTC, April 8-12, 2015 Institute of High Energy Physics Qiang Zhao Institute of High Energy Physics, CAS and Theoretical Physics Center for Science Facilities (TPCSF), CAS In collaboration with J.-M. Richard and Q. Wang, to be submitted

2. Weak decay of  in nuclear medium

Nuclear chart with strangeness Λ Multi-strangeness system such as Neutron star Extending drip-line! Interesting phenomena concerning the neutron halo have been observed near the neutron drip line of light nuclei. How does the halo structure change when a Λ particle is injected into an unstable nucleus? What’s the role played by the  -N interaction in the formation of neutral hypernucleus? What can we learn from their decays? Slide from E. Hiyama  5 He 5 He

C. Rappold et al., Physics Letters B 728 (2014) 543–548 Free  : (263.2±2.0) ps

Why surprising? p  n n p n  deuteron Non-mesonic weak decay

The  weak decay su u dd u uu d W  p   p  I) Direct pion emission II) Pole contribution via baryon internal conversion  p  s u d u d u uu d  s d d d uu u d u p n    p   p n    

In the quark model the transition amplitude can be expressed as:   p  p n   

Explicit calculation of the strong and weak transition matrix elements in the quark model: NiNi NfNf   NiNi NfNf The non-relativistic expansion gives Goldberger-Treiman relation:

The transition amplitude becomes: indicates the SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking. Explicit cancellation between the pole terms.  is determined by the free  decay and will be fixed.

  n n p     00 n    I)    n   II)    p  0 00 p p p  00    III)    n    n n   00    All involve cancellations among the pole terms

Some general features: i)The  and  hadronic weak decays involve significant cancelations among the pole terms which is determined by the SU(3) flavor symmetry. ii)However, the cancellations are sensitive to the SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking, which means a coherent study of the free  and  hadronic weak decay is necessary. iii)Information about the short-distance behavior of the wavefunction is also crucial, but only contributes to the overall factor. The dominance of pole contributions in the  and  hadronic weak decays has important consequence for the lifetime of light hyper-nuclei.

 n p J=1/2   n p p       n p p    p n p n  Pauli principle will forbid the intermediate (nn) to stay in the same state, which will make these two pole terms different in hyper-nucleus decays.

The presence of Pauli principle will affect the relative strength between the pole terms. where  = 1.0 No Pauli blocking 0.5 Fully Pauli blocked The Pauli blocking leads to significant change of the cancellation pattern and strongly increase the transition amplitude.

Wavefunctions for the light nuclei, -- anti-symmetrized in the isospin space The spin and isospin wavefunctions are:

The spatial integral is model dependent, while the spin-isospin wavefunctions are better defined.

Brief summary Thanks for your attention!

How to organize the (  nn) system? Wang, Richard and Zhao, PRC91, (2015); [nucl-th] T=  4 n=(  nn) S=0, I=1, L=0 No Pauli blocking Groundstate: J P =0 +

The intermediate S 11 (1535) excitations is sizeable near threshold. Wang, Richard and Zhao, [nucl-th]

Production mechanism for (  nn) Wang, Richard and Zhao, [nucl-th] Assumption: The S-wave nuclear wavefunctions are dominant.

Missing mass spectrum for (  nn) M(K  K  ) Recoil mass spectrum of K  K  Wang, Richard and Zhao, [nucl-th] By tagging the two K+ in the final state, the production of the (  nn) will suffer nearly no background at all. The signal will peak at the mass of the (  nn).

The interference between the double nucleon Born term and double S 11 (1535) excitation plays a significant role. Total cross section for (  nn)
