Developing Other Health Skills In this lesson, you will Learn About… Ways to get the health information you need. Behaviors that enhance the way you look and feel. Internal and external influences on your health.

Developing Other Health Skills The Vocabulary terms in this lesson are: Support system. Environment. Click each term to display its definition.

Health Skills: An Overview Health skills are practices that help you maintain, protect, and improve your health. They are also called life skills. Accessing Information Self-Management Practicing Healthful Behaviors Stress Management Analyzing Influences Interpersonal Communication Communication Skills Refusal Skills Conflict Resolution Skills Decision Making/Goal Setting Advocacy Health skills will benefit you not only during your teen years but also throughout your life. Some of the skills have already been discussed in this chapter—decision making, goal setting, communication skills, refusal skills, and stress management.

Accessing Information Sources for reliable health information include parents, teachers, counselors, school nurses, other trusted adults, and the print materials shown below. Always use critical-thinking skills to interpret media messages about health information. Library Print and Broadcast Media Internet Community Resources This skill involves finding accurate and reliable health information and using health resources. Although you can obtain information from a variety of sources, not all of it is accurate or reliable. Some information is misleading or even completely false. Have students identify some good sources of information in addition to the ones listed here.

Practicing Healthful Behaviors Practicing healthful behaviors involves taking care of yourself and avoiding risky situations. It includes: Making health a habit. Building a support system. Practicing healthful behaviors means developing lifelong habits that increase your level of health and protect you from illness and injury. Making health a habit—Making health a priority and establishing good habits are key elements for good health. Building a support system—Create a support system from parents and other relatives, teachers, counselors, health care providers, and religious leaders.

Analyzing Influences Understanding internal and external influences enables you to choose positive behaviors: Internal Influences Your knowledge Your likes and dislikes Your values Your desires Your curiosity Your fears External Influences Your family Your friends/peers Your environment Your culture Laws Media/technology Your role models Have students create their own lists of the internal and external influences on their health.
