Listening Skills Ability to identify and understand what others are saying An active listener is able to do these 4 things simultaneously:- –u–understanding a speaker’s accent –u–understanding his grammar –u–understanding his vocabulary –g–grasping his meaning

Basic steps in Listening -L-Listening enough to catch what the speaker is saying -K-Know or realize the speaker’s meaning -T-Think about what the speaker has said whether it makes sense STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3 Hearing Understanding Judging

Strategies for Listening Concentrate & focus on the speech Listen with a purpose Try to grasp the gist of the speech (if only once) Concentrate on identifying specific details or key words Guess the meaning of unfamiliar words by paying attention to the context in which they occur Learn to process information quickly

Tips on How to Be a Good Listener Give your full attention Make sure your mind is focused Let the speaker finish before you begin to talk Listen for main ideas Jot down important points given by the speaker Pay particular attention on the use of discourse markers or cohesive devices by the speaker
