Testing at Green Valley Academy Isoke Mims, M.Ed Data Coach/Testing Coordinator

Introduction Green Valley Alternative Academy is one of two alternative academy programs whose primary focus is students in grades 8, 9 through 12 who are experiencing behavioral and attendance concerns in the regular classroom setting. Green Valley is located in the historic Hillcrest Heights community in Temple Hills, Maryland in southern Prince George’s county, minutes away from the eastern border of the District of Columbia, our nation’s capital. Green Valley provides a transitional program that incorporates all of the students’ data and state assessment testing information.

Measurement and Evaluation To aid in the overall academic development of all students it is necessary to assess progress in each of the core subject areas i.e. Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Prince George’s County Schools provides a rigorous course of study which requires both Formative assessments (ensures that the goals of the instruction are being achieved) and Summative assessments (looks at more than one learner’s performance to see how well a group did on a learning task that utilized specific learning materials). This goal is achieved through teacher created tests and quizzes which mirror the state testing format of selected response items (multiple choice) and BCR/ECR’s (brief and extended written constructed responses) as well as county and state created assessments in the Maryland’s School Performance Program (MSPP).

Maryland Schools Performance Program At Green Valley Academy we administrate each Maryland assessment required for successful completion of the academic trek for graduation. Throughout the year we offer the MSA/HSA (Maryland Schools Assessment/High School Assess- ment) quarterly bench- marks in each of the Core Subject areas and the cumulative evaluation of the MSA/HSA Assessments

Testing Opportunities Many testing opportunities are scheduled throughout each term. The High School Assessments (HSA) are now being offered during the Fall, Winter, and Spring at Green Valley. Information concerning summer administrations can be attained before the end of the school year. The MSA for middle school students is given during the spring. The Maryland State Dept. of Education creates testing windows for each administration which affords every student ample opportunity to make up the exam incase of absences or emergencies.
