CAMPUS CULTURE SLS 1501 (Fall 2015) Brinkley

WHAT IS CULTURE? “The collective programming of the mind that distinguishes the members of one human group from another.” - Geert Hofstede

THINK OF CULTURE AS AN ICEBERG

WHAT IS CULTURE SHOCK? The stress we feel when we experience or are confronted with behaviors and beliefs that differ significantly from our own.

EXERCISE: “I’M NEW HERE.” ONE VOLUNTEER FROM EACH GROUP

WHAT ABOUT THE CULTURE OF HIGHER EDUCATION? It differs greatly from the culture of high school and is designed to prepare students for the “culture” of the professional, working world.

CONSIDER: How do these “cultural norms” compare to those of a job or workplace?

SURFACE CULTURE -- WHAT “LANGUAGE” DO WE SPEAK IN THE HIGHER EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT? * Course Catalog * Standard course load (full-time = 12 credits or more) * FAFSA * Advisors vs. Guidance Counselors * Syllabi * “Direct Connect” (Florida specific) * Dual-enrollment (Florida specific) * Withdrawing from classes

DEEP CULTURE – WHAT THINGS MAKE A COLLEGE UNIQUE? * Mascot * Colors, logos, hand signs * Friendliness of staff and students * How do we address one another? * Style of dress * Demographic make-up of students * History
