Safety and Health Committee Establishment of the Safety and Health Committee is required by the law, and details of the committee including membership, management, authorities and duties are also defined in the laws and regulations. 4 Workplace Review Report
The homework list records all the safety and health issues discussed or pointed out by the committee. Issues are followed up until countermeasures are taken. The homework list is updated and reported to the committee every month. 5 Homework List
Major items on the meeting agenda: − Laser training and eye examination for students − Loss of a bottle of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) − Earthquake countermeasures survey − Electrical safety (management of high-voltage direct currents) − Emergency procedures at the Child Development Center − Emergency showers and eye washers − Overtime work − Seminars and trainings: Update, basic life support, vender, security export control, N95 mask fitting, industrial accident compensation insurance system, bousai center staff and etc. − Working environment measurements − PPE, barefoot in laboratory − Odor at Lab1 Level C − Hiyari-Hatto Project ( since 2011 ), introduction of database − Appointment of new health officers and report to the Labour Standard Office 6 Activity in this fiscal year so far (FY2014)

Issue: OIST does not provide JSPS Postdoc fellows with the medical examinations that the employees receive Background: The industrial Safety and Health Law does not contain any provisions regarding medical examinations of postdoctoral fellows Committee: expressed concerns over the current situation Survey other universities: Decision: Recommendation letter to President – Request for securing necessary budget Result: JSPS Postdoc fellows have become to be able to receive the medical examinations at OIST 8 Activity Example – Health Examination for Postdoctoral Fellows (Sept. 2012) OrganizationState of implementation Tokyo UniversityEven postdoctoral fellows can receive a medical examination if they are on the list of checkup examinees that each department submits in advance. Kyoto UniversityEven postdoctoral fellows employed in various programs can receive a medical examination if they are listed with a certain title (even part-time) on the roster of the university. RIKENAs a general rule, postdoctoral fellows can receive a medical examination.
