FAIRMODE MEETING NORRKÖPING JUNE Session: The use of Receptor Models in Source Apportionment (coordinator C. Belis) General considerations on receptor models General Principles, most common approaches, basic algorithms were presented. It was stressed the dramatic increase in the number of publications dealing with SA and RM in scientific literature during the last decade as an indication of the potentials of this approach. PMF is by far the most used tool worldwide. USA and South East Asia are leaders in the application of these techniques and have dedicated monitoring networks for speciated PM. In Europe there is an increasing interest but the lack of long term databases is limiting its development. There is an urgent need to implement a European network of urban monitoring sites with PM chemical characterization.

FAIRMODE MEETING NORRKÖPING JUNE Session: The use of Receptor Models in Source Apportionment (coordinator C. Belis) Summary of the main outputs of the workshop in November Receptor modelling have recognized potentials for source identification with perspectives of further improvements due to the continuous development of advanced tools. Well adjusted QA/QC protocols and training are needed to harmonize the application of these tools at the European level and to improve the competence of the model users. The extension of RM application to new pollutants should be further investigated. A dedicated forum to promote the exchange of information between experts in source apportionment with receptor models was created. Launch of the RM Intercomparison

FAIRMODE MEETING NORRKÖPING JUNE Session: The use of Receptor Models in Source Apportionment (coordinator C. Belis) Presentation of the RM Intercomparison outline and timeline. JRC prepared and distributed a DB to participants (20 groups from 13 countries). The characteristics of the real world database, the supplementary information and the result reporting templates distributed to participants were explained. There will be two step procedure. –A progress report with the evaluation of a real world DB expected by the end of –There will be a meeting to discuss first step and distribute an artificial DB. –Final meeting will likely take place in June 2012.

FAIRMODE MEETING NORRKÖPING JUNE Session: The use of Receptor Models in Source Apportionment (coordinator C. Belis) Contributions to the draft Quality Assurance Quality Control protocol for the use of Receptor Models in the implementation of the AQD. The outline of the QA/QC protocol for RM was presented. A group of experts is contributing supported by world leading scientists P. Hopke and P. Paatero. The participation of other experts is welcome. The first four chapters regarding operations to be performed as preparatory steps are already at the draft stage. The full draft will be further discussed in the next Intercomparison dedicated meeting in late 2011 or early The final draft is expected to be delievered in June 2012 and serve as basis for the Recommendation document.

FAIRMODE MEETING NORRKÖPING JUNE Session: The use of Receptor Models in Source Apportionment (coordinator C. Belis) Synergies with other SGs SG3-SG2. Receptor Models could be used as independent check for problematic sources like: biomass burning, natural sources (Saharan dust episodes, biogenic sources, etc.), ship emission, etc. Contributions from SG2 to Emission Inventories: Recommend the validation of emission inventories of problematic sources by comparison with receptor model outputs (among others) as part of QA/QC protocols. SG2 will provide a list of most relevant sources for which source profiles are needed. SG4-SG2. In both SGs are performed comparison and evaluation of different models and users for the same purposes. Exchanges and harmonization of methodologies could benefit both teams. SG1-SG2 contribute to the development of the methodology for the evaluation of site representativeness. Propose to include receptor models in the Model Documentation System

FAIRMODE MEETING NORRKÖPING JUNE Session: The use of Receptor Models in Source Apportionment (coordinator C. Belis) Participants reports on new studies, recent applications and ongoing projects of source apportionment using receptor models Olivier Favez presented a project on the extension an aetholameter model. Maria Luisa Volta reported the model the developed for integrated assessment using an approach based on artificial neural networks. Expected deliverables by 2011: Progress report with evaluation of the real world DB intercomparison First draft of the QA/QC protocol Oral presentation and extended abstract publication in Harmo 14 Conference Organization of a meeting for intercomparison and QA/QC progress evaluation Preparation of a synthetic database
