BY Patrick Bednark Anoka Ramsey CC July 10 th 2012

For this project : I have selected a one mile patch of land just outside of Braham, MN. I have chose this section of land because it had various types Of foliage, fields and patches of forests, also because it was conveniently close. HEADING

- Location on Map is just west of Braham, 1 square mile Highlighted in yellow. Image Taken currently with Google Earth photo. LOCATION MAP

INFRARED VEIW Vegetation shows darker red and the blue areas are wet areas, lakes, swamp rivers Etc..

TOPOGRAPHIC MAP MN Geological Survey Last Modified: February 23, 2012 You can see swampy areas Here

GEOLOGY SANDSTONE A major time period when sandstone along with other sedimentary rocks in Minnesota were deposited was during the early Paleozoic era (about 500 million years ago). LIMESTONE and DOLOSTONE Farther offshore away from the beach, finer grained sediment accumulated and chemical sediment precipitated to form limestone and a closely related rock called dolostone.

Most the area covered with organics And sandy loam silt/till as Seen on the chart above.

-Located on Paleozoic Sedimentary bedrock Formations.

LOCATION MAP Mile section just West of Braham, MN Highlighted in red (Scale 1:24:000) Map Grid Year I chose this map from 83 to shows the little streams that run through it part of the Water treatment plant added to the mess of swamps.

Natural and rare species exist on very small portion of the land you can see In the eastern part very limited but it exists witch was pretty exciting.

-Survey Commenced 12/5/1857 Azro B Darling (Deputy Surveyor) -Survey Completed 12/12/1857 Azro B Darling (Deputy Surveyor) -Contracts Instr. (MN)10/17/1857 SURVEY OF THE AREA 1857

SOIL SURVEY ISSUED SEPTEMBER OF 1958 Soil Survey report from the 50s I found don’t much differ from Todays in comparison not much Has changed in that area from What I found.

Geologic/Geomorphic Setting Summary 6 FT - Sandy glacial outwash or eolian mantle over loamy till or lacustrine Sediments on glacial moraines or lake planes.

CLIMATE Average Temperature Based on a 28-Year Record Average Precipitation Based on a 29-year Record

This area originally covered with hardwoods, chiefly red oak, bur oak, white birch, Sugar maple, black ash, basswood, American elm, butternut, ironwood, aspen, And wild plum. A few Areas were covered only with prairie grasses. ORIGINAL BIOME

LAND USE Township, administered with Kanabec County, was named by officers of the Great Northern Railway company. It was incorporated as a village March 5, 1901 it had a station of the Great Northern Railway. The Section of land was used for Lumber and now is being used partly for farming/horses.

Forest types and grasslands map and key.

-Some statistics in land are use in Acreage.

Services Training, Horseback Riding, Lessons, Trails Breeds: Appaloosa, Arabian, Draft, Friesian, Hilfiger, Morgan, Mule, Paint, Palomino. Training: All Around, Barrel, Beginner, Bitting, Breaking, Ground, Lesson, Trail Riding. A horse farm was also seen on the north east side off highway 65

Land use here earlier on was full of trees and were cleared out For lumber, then converted into corn and soybean, I seen some hay Being cut and bailed as well. Random water ways were trenched For the water treatment facility could be seen along side the road And in some of the wet grassy fields.

ROAD PHOTOS Starting off on the East side soy bean field with Deciduous trees melds northward into Grassy fields.

Heading down the north top to the west more fields with deciduous trees and some Wild flowers starting to appear on a downward sloped hill, looks like some of the prairie is fighting for a comeback.

Random white pine only one I found among some deciduous trees, probably survived Logging or was planted accidently, I found it located on top of a sloping hill.

Random pigeon shack? Chicken house? As I make my way to the end of the north western Top right on the corner of the turn off south on Hwy 65, odd place since their were no other Structures around other than the Rice lake cemetery on the opposite side of the road.

Heading South on 65 from the North west side heavily wooded trees and random patches Of grass fields and corn fields off in the distance some soy bean rotation as well looks like The fields were rotation of both small plots of farm fields.

Taking a left turn midway down eastward on a dirt road into the middle, a lot more Birch trees can be seen as well as swampy areas that the farmers there did not fill In and left, the horse flies were terrible.

On the opposite side of the dirt road more wetish grassy fields and random huge Deciduous trees a big change in looks compared to the dead smelly fly infested Swamp on the other side of the road.

Heading my way back north east off the dirt road a lot of soft wood birch and hard wood Mix with more sparse grassy fields and wet lands swampy and wet grassy plots full of Flesh eating horse flies.
