Allegories Allegory: story which has two meanings, one literal and one that alludes to a historical, social, or mythological event –George Orwell’s Animal Farm –Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass)

Archetype recurring patterns of human behavior, symbolized by standard types of characters in movies and stories –The reluctant hero –The damsel in distress –The wise mentor –The evil but smart villain

“Once Upon a Time” Basics: –What is the setting of the story? –What is the basic arc of the story: rising action, climax, falling action, resolution? –What happens to the little boy? What choices did the parents make to contribute to this?

Color-marking: an intro. We will look for patterns in the text: –Repeated images –Repeated words/phrases –Repeated literary devices Using these patterns, we’ll evaluate the meaning of the story: –Theme –Irony –Etc.

“Once Upon a Time" Evaluation: –What does the family value? How do you know? –What is the progression of choices? What drives the parents to make these choices? –What language does the story (i.e. the story within the story) start with? What language does the story end with? Is there a connection?

Who or what do the parents fear? How does the author describe the feared? What language and imagery?
