Sentence: John Locke believed that a government should protect the peoples natural rights. Vocabulary Development

Word: Natural Rights Explanation: The belief, founded by Locke, that all people have the right to “life, liberty, and property.” If a government does not give its people their natural rights then the people should overthrow the government.

Enlightenment Thinkers Thomas Hobbes: believed people should give up their rights to the government in order to live in a safe and orderly environment, known as a social contract. John Lock: believed the government’s job is to protect people’s natural rights, life liberty and property. If the government does not do their job, they can be overthrown.

Enlightenment Thinkers Baron de Montesquieu: believed in separating power in government into branches. Jean Jacques Rousseau: believed the only good government was one formed by the people, a direct democracy. Mary Wollstonecraft: believed women should receive education and enter male-dominated fields like medicine and politics.
