Goals: Understand the assignment for Paper 5. Understand the concept of “research.” Begin thinking about topics for Paper 5. Research

Write a paper of at least 1200 words in which you explain what "the experts" are saying about a topic that is currently in the news and is open to multiple interpretations. You must cite at least six published sources, at least three of which must be available in hard-copy publications, and you must use in-text citations and a Works Cited page in accordance with MLA conventions. Your goal is simply to inform me of the variety of views currently being expressed, not to make an argument about a particular position or view. Understanding the Assignment

Understanding the Assignment Questions about the assignment for Paper 5?

Research Research is “more than finding sources. Doing research means learning about something you want to know more about. It means finding out what’s been said about the topic, listening in on a larger conversation (where you will no doubt encounter many varying viewpoints) – and then, when you write about that topic, adding your own ideas to that conversation.” from “Starting Your Research” (page 329)

Research Research is not… …finding sources to confirm what you already think. …using the first several items that come up on Google. …finding “just enough” to meet the word count. Research is… …actively looking for different perspectives. …evaluating the credibility of your sources. …acknowledging possible bias in your sources. …finding more than you can possibly include in your paper.

Research newspapers, magazines, blogs, tabloids, gossip, click-bait scholarly, college-appropriate sources
