ENGLISH

English is a window to the world. It is an international & intra-continental link language. One can travel all over world if one knows English language. It is refer as library language. English is widely spoken all over the world.

English spoken countries Different countries in the world use different languages as their mother tongue but most of the countries like USA,Austrelia, Canada,Newzealand, South Africa etc. use english as a second language. English is the mother tongue of about 320 million people & 200 million people use English as their second language.

Two major types 1.British English 2.American English Though both are types of english,they slightly differ from each other in following aspects. 1.Spelling 2.Grammar 3.Pronunciation.

Importance of English English is the language of commerce & commisions. All trades are carried out through the English language. The trade contracts & agreements, legal document, Reports of commisions are recorded in English. For India, it is an associate official language of country.

English is widely use for internet usages as compare to other languages.

Translations As English is refer as library language, many books are translated into English. For minority literature it is a platform for exposure. Because of translation of such literature it came into light & people from all over the world can access this literature with the help of translation.

English is important as a library language which helps to acquire deep knowledge from all branches of study. English is a language which is rich in literature- humanistic, scientific & technical. According to T. C. Baruah more than 60 % of world’s technical journals, newspapers, periodicals etc. are published in english. The recent inventions & discoveries get first printed in English. It is also supposed that no library will be completed unless it consists of books of english authors.

Causes of low standard of English Mindset. Dearth of competent teacher s in english. Faulty methods of teaching. Inadiquate evaluation system. Unnecessary emphasis on grammar. Impact of mother tongue

Guidelines for learners Follow the appropriate sequence of language skills. Read as much english as possible Follow the standard pronunciation. Do pay attention towards grammar but don’t bother much about it. Try to avoid literal translation.
