BW Research Area Orientation - 3 Do-it-yourself approach to projects –All work is Unclassified –Convenient, comprehensive and ideal setting designed to facilitate innovation Primary objective –Encourage cross fertilization of ideas and skills –Foster innovation, collaboration, and creative problem solving Provide students and staff with access to instruction and equipment –Instruction in basic soldering and assembly –Classroom/Conference room –Hand tools –Machine shop tools Beaver Works Description

BW Research Area Orientation - 4 Beaver Works classroom area consists of a multi-use space –The classroom can be used as one large space or divided to host two smaller classes –Each classroom has a projector, tables, chairs and screen The Café area has a sink, microwave, coffee machine and multiple areas for sitting Classroom/Café Area

BW Research Area Orientation - 7 The Beaver Works Research Area Hours of Accessibility –24/7 with approved badge access –Research Area should be kept clean and users should wear proper attire –For soldering stations solder instruction must be completed (separate training, see Facility Manager) or must prove capability (past documented training) –Beaver Works Safety Procedures BW001 will be followedBeaver Works Safety Procedures BW001 Training must be taken before access approval is granted Research Area Access

BW Research Area Orientation - 8 Prototyping Workshop Access Policy –Users must already have access to Research Area –Users of industrial machining equipment must receive machine-specific training/evaluation by Facility Manager prior to being granted access The “Flashlight Program” will be required as part of training If previously qualified on machine-specific equipment proof must be shown Facility Manager will grant key access to specific industrial machining equipment when it is determined that a user is capable User must abide by all the safety policies and procedures Keys cannot be given to other users without the permission of the Facility Manager –Once approved u sers will be allowed access to the Prototyping Workshop in groups of 2 or more Users must be approved/trained when industrial machining equipment is in use. For MIT Students, after hours, an authorized/trained graduate student must be present in the workshop per MIT policy –Number of Persons allowed in Prototype shop: Min 2 – Max 10 –Facility Manager will deny access if the policies and procedures are not followed Prototyping Workshop Access

BW Research Area Orientation - 9 See Beaver Works Safety Policy (SP) BW001 for general rulesBeaver Works Safety Policy (SP) BW001 Prototyping Workshop rules –A “Panic” button must be picked up when signing in and be worn at all times in the workshop –Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required (safety glasses, gloves) Safety glasses must be worn at all times Gloves must be worn when necessary (never around equipment with rotating parts) Ear protection must be worn when necessary –Machine guarding required to be utilized –No cell phones, Ipods or headphones –Long hair must be pulled back –No jewelry can be worn – including rings and watches –No loose clothing – including ties –Badges must be removed and placed in a designated location –Must wear appropriate shoes (flat and toes must be covered) –Never work alone – the Prototyping Workshop uses the 2-person rule –Never leave a machine running unattended –Never use a rag near moving machinery –Never use damaged machinery or tools – report any issues to the Facility Manager –No food or drinks –Dial x100 in case of Emergency Prototyping Workshop Safety Policy

BW Research Area Orientation - 10 Fire extinguisher locations –Main Entrance: straight back by the windows –Research Area: next to eye wash station –Small Classroom: inside door on the wall side –Prototyping Workshop: chemical work room in the back of the area Emergencies –If there is an emergency in the building dial x100 –If you need police contact MIT Police at x31212 –After an emergency contact Lincoln or MIT Security/Medical Department to fill out any required paperwork 5 telephone locations –4 in the Research Area, 1 in the Prototyping Workshop Facility Manager’s office Office #2 Lincoln Controlled Area (LCA) Research Area, located along the windows Prototyping Workshop, on the table to the right when you walk in Safety

BW Research Area Orientation - 11 There are approved systems that can be used by Lincoln Laboratory staff and students for research and projects in the Research Area and Prototype Workshop. (See the Facility Manager for access.) Lincoln Laboratory systems may only be operated in the Lincoln Controlled Area unless prior SSD approval has been completed via the Beaver Works Facility Use Form (see Business Manager for form) Users of the Beaver Works Center are obligated to use the IT resources in accordance with applicable laws, MIT and Lincoln Laboratory Policy IT use: –Must follow policy against harassment, and its standards of honesty and personal conduct –Must be responsible, ethical and professional –Must be limited to Beaver Works business and incidental personal use –Must not be used for the benefit of personal businesses or other organizations unless permitted by policy or otherwise authorized IT Resources

BW Research Area Orientation - 13 Users –Complete general and work area-specific training –Be familiar with hazards of chemicals you are using, and with signs and symptoms of overexposure –Promptly report chemical exposures, accidents, incidents, and near misses to the Facility Manager –Seek help at MIT Medical Department if injured at Beaver Works –Clean up facility after each use –No food or drink in the Research Area –Know where to find the first aid kits, fire extinguishers and telephones Your Roles and Responsibilities

BW Research Area Orientation - 14 Beaver Works serves as a single convenient, comprehensive, and open laboratory designed to foster innovation, collaboration, and creative problem solving Safety is the #1 priority and will be incorporated into all aspects of training and usage Students and staff will have access to instruction, equipment and tools not commonly available providing the maximum utility to those looking to train, explore and/or prototype With this training you have access to Research, Café and Classroom areas but not access to the Prototype Shop This training does not grant you access to use hand tools, chemicals, soldering stations or machine shop tools –For access to these individual sections of the Facility you must complete specific training for each –Contact the Facility Manager or Business Manager with questions on how to access to specific training needs This facility is available to students and staff for development, preprogram idea or concept validation, and unstructured curiosity driven prototyping Summary
