Hercules Beetle Project by Cole Prezant

Description If you saw a Hercules beetle, you would know it was if it was: very large, (if it was male it would be larger because of its horns, but females are larger if the male horns were excluded, for females don’t have horns.) with the rare case of a near seven inch male (horns included). Hercules beetles are a dull yellowish- greenish- greyish color with spots like ink dripped on the shell.

Description continued The horns of a Hercules beetle are black and sometimes serrated. Female Male

Larva and diet Hercules beetle larva live in rotting oak logs. In these logs their food is supplied, for it is rotting oaks. The larva turns to beetle, the beetle eats sweet fruits, tree sap, and, of course, oak. Tobacco is another food in their diet.

Why they aren’t common in N.C. Hercules beetles never were common in N.C, due to colder climate and not very tropical weather. However, they were more common here in previous years due less pesticides. People started spraying for Hercules beetles after they put in tobacco and other crops in their diet. While I was searching for images one had the caption ‘identify a pest’ so that shows peoples distaste in Hercules beetles.
