1 CALIPSO Search and Sub-setting Website Quick Tutorial

2 Login To gain access to the CALIPSO Search and Sub-setting Tools ( the user must log on using their NASA Langley ASDC user name and password. (These are the same log on credentials that would be used to order any of the standard CALIPSO data products.) Users who need to set up an account with the NASA Langley ASDC can do so by clicking on the 'New User Registration' button on the bottom of the page.

3 Data Product Selection -Which CALIPSO data product to use. -Which variables to extract from the file -Granule types (day, night, both) Temporal Filtering -Date range -Orbit number range Geospatial Filtering -Area selected by bounding box; dynamically from map or inputted by N/S/E/W range. -Point & radial distance circle -ESRI defined region Once you have successfully logged on, you will see a new page like the one shown to the right. The three different sections of this page offer various tools for specifying the content and temporal and spatial extent of the subsetted data. The following tools are available.

4 Data Product Selection Day, Night, or Both Granules Which variables are going to be in the sub-set file. Which variable groupings have been added by the user Which variable groupings the user has the ability to extract from the file. Product Type The user has the ability to select the CALIPSO file type, day and/or night granules, and a down selection of the parameters available. Parameters have been grouped together based on type, and are listed in the left most window. If no parameters are selected by the user then a default package (time, position, and other ancillary information) is put into the file. The user must select the grouping(s) which they want, which are added to the center window. A listing of the parameters selected are then added to the output file are in the right most window. Users wanting all parameters in the file must select all variable groupings.

Product Type The example below shows that the user has selected all parameters from the CALIOP Lidar Level 1 data product. Scrolling down the listing in the right most window will show a list of all parameters that will be included in the subsetted data files.

6 Data Product Selection – 532nm Calibration Day, Night, or Both Granules Which variables are going to be in the sub-set file. Which variable groupings have been added by the user Which variable groupings the user has the ability to extract from the file. Product Type The example below shows that the user has selected 532nm calibration parameters from the CALIOP Lidar Level 1 data product. The right most window has been scrolled down to show which parameters will be included.

7 Temporal Filtering The user has the ability to filter files based on a temporal range, set on day boundaries. The user also can select based on a CALIPSO orbit number.

8 Geospatial Filtering The user has the ability to filter files based on a geospatial selection. The user can isolate regions based on a latitude/longitude box (either set dynamically through the map or set through North/South/East/West bounding points), a point-radial distance target selection, or pre-defined ESRI regions.

9 Geospatial Filtering – Bounded Box In this example the user has used their cursor to isolate a region around the Australian continent.

10 Geospatial Filtering – Atlanta, Georgia In this example the user is looking for all orbits which are within 100 kilometers of Atlanta, Georgia (33.45 N, W).

11 Geospatial Filtering – Delaware In this example the user is looking for all orbits which fall within the U.S. state of Delaware.

12 Ancillary Information The site also provides the user with the total number of files found for a given search. In the example below a search was done over the entire mission for those orbits which fall over Europe. The site returned back 21,112 files in 4.18 seconds. The user also has the ability to provide feedback on the site, either to report problems or to make suggestions.

13 Confirmation and Ordering Once the user is satisfied with the results of the search then a confirmation request needs to be made, using the low left ‘Confirm Request’ button on the bottom of the page. Once selected the page on the right should come up. In this example, again isolating all orbits which are within 100km of Atlanta, a complete list of files are provided. A link to the CALIPSO browse image pages are highlighted in blue next to the file names; [1][2][3][4]. The search criteria is listed above. The user also has the ability to save off the a hard copy of the selected files, in case the user already has the files locally. The user must select the ‘Submit Request to ASDC’ button in order to fulfill the sub- setting order. The user will be prompted with a message signifying that ASDC has gotten the order and will be sending to the specified address. Once the order has been filled the user will be provided via with instructions on how to FTP the data.
