POLITICS UNIT IV O & B According to Stephen Robbins, “politics in an organization are those activities that are not required as part of one’s formal role in the organization, but that influence, or attempt to influence, the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within the organization

POLITICS/POLITICAL BEHAVIOR Organizational politics is all about--actions not officially approved by an organization that are taken to influence others to meet one's personal goals. Organizational politics does involve planning one's self- interest above the interests of the organization.

TYPES: OF POLITICAL BEHAVIOR Legitimate Political Behavior Normal everyday politics. Illegitimate Political Behavior Extreme political behavior that violates the implied rules of the game.

FACTORS INFLUENCING POLITICAL BEHAVIOR. Individual factors High self-monitors Internal locus of control High Mach personality Organizational investment Perceived job alternatives Expectations of success Organizational Factors Reallocation of Resources Promotion Opportunities Low Trust Role Ambiguity Zero sum reward Practice Democratic decision making High performance pressure Self serving senior managers Political behaviour Low High Rewards Averted Punishments Favourable outcomes

High self-monitors Skilled in political behavior Internal locus of control proactive and prone to manipulate situation in their favor High Mach personality will to manipulate and desire for power. Use politics to further self interest Organizational investment investment in terms of expectations forces the individual to use illegitimate means UNIT IV O & B

Perceived job alternatives more job opportunities an individual has, results in more political behavior Organizational Factors Reallocation of Resources the reallocation of resources is necessary when the resources available either increase or decrease. These situations force the individual to resort the policies Promotion Opportunities normally the opportunitys for promotion or advancement are lesser than the candidate expectation UNIT IV O & B

Low Trust low trust in organizations leads to tight control which in turn makes the subordinates to behave illegitimately Role Ambiguity the unclear expectation from the employee makes him act politically Zero sum reward Practice the win lose approach in reward allocation is called zero sum approach people perceive that they won double if others lose UNIT IV O & B

Democratic decision making the traditionally autocratic managers cannot make the decision democratically in its true sense High performance pressure high performance pressures make the people to find short cuts and politics to show superfluously high performance or through window dressing Self serving senior managers the political behavior by the top management with rewards encourages the people at the lower level to resort to politics UNIT IV O & B

EMPLOYEE RESPONSES TO ORGANIZATIONAL POLITICS. Organizational Politics May Threaten Employees. Decreased Job Satisfaction Increased Anxiety and Stress Increased Turnover Reduced Performance

TACTICS USED TO GAIN POLITICAL POWER UNIT IV O & B There are several tactics which individuals and groups can use to gain power in an organization. Some of these tactics below Bargaining or trade-off Competition Co-optation Coalition Pressure Control over information Control over communication channels
