THE LEGACY OF THE WAR Chapter 7; Section 4

ESSENTIAL QUESTION How was it possible that American Patriots gained their independence from the powerful British Empire?

COSTS OF THE WAR Estimated 25,700 American deaths; 1,400 missing; 8,200 wounded Estimated 10,000 British deaths Soldiers who served in the American army received little or no pay Soldiers received certificates for land in the west instead of pay Left a national debt of about $27 million

COSTS OF THE WAR Thousands of Loyalists lost their property Around 60, ,000 Loyalists fled to Canada due to post-war treatment Patriots found it difficult to forgive traitor Benedict Arnold Turned over an American fort to the British during the war Name still means traitor

TREATY OF PARIS The United States was declared independent The boundaries would be set at the Mississippi River to the west, Canada to the north, and Spanish Florida to the south The United States was given permission to fish off of the Canadian coast Each side would repay debts to each other British would return any enslaved persons Congress would recommend that the states return any property they had seized from Loyalists Neither Britain nor the United States lived up to these terms. U.S. never repaid debts or returned Loyalist property Britain never returned runaway slaves

CREATING A NEW NATION The revolution created a new nation that valued the ideal of Liberty All new state constitutions contained some sort of individual rights and liberties Most states included separation of church and state During the Revolution, many people began to see a conflict between slavery and the ideal of liberty.
