Objective Students will be able to identify why the four seasons occur. Students will also be able to physically show why the four seasons occur.

Materials Needed Marshmallows Toothpicks Markers Lamp or Flashlight Smart Board Pens/Pencils Lab Worksheet Response Sheet-Seasons and Sun worksheet

Technology Used Computer Smart Board Microsoft Word

Introduction Students have already learned about the four seasons in a prior lesson. A “review” sheet of the seasons will be given out at the beginning of class. I will go through the “review” sheet out loud with the students using the smart board.

Developmental Activity After the review sheet is complete the lab will be handed out. Before the lab is started students will answer the before you begin questions found in the beginning of the lab. After the students answer the questions they will be reviewed out loud.

I will go on to demonstrate how I would like the lab to be set up. I will do this by having a visual model of what the marshmallow should look like and also by drawing what the marshmallow should look like on the smart board. Students will then carry out the lab experiment. Throughout the lab I will be asking students to show me different things using their marshmallows. I will be walking around assisting the students that need help and make sure they are on task.

Assessment The first part of assessment will be through participation, how well they contributed to the class discussion on the review sheet and throughout the lab. The second part of the assessment will be through observation. If the students were correctly doing the lab and using the marshmallow to correctly show me what I was asking.

Closure When the lab is finished I will ask the students to tell me what they have learned through doing this lab.

Follow-Up The students will have to finish any part of the lab that they did not complete in class. They will also be given “Response Sheet-Seasons and Sun” worksheet to do for homework. The lab will be due the next class day. The students will have two days to work on the worksheet and hand it in.
