Information Services - Unified Collaboration - Keeping You Connected Why Aim for Sustainability? As good corporate citizen we all should support international efforts by governments, business, researchers and educators, community groups and individuals by protecting against: ●long term economic dislocation ●environmental degradation Aim: to reduce operating costs which in turn reduces greenhouse gases and pollution Is global warming real?

Information Services - Unified Collaboration - Keeping You Connected 1.Sustainability is today’s investment in a better tomorrow 2.Forerunner in the field, in 1975 Griffith launched Australia’s first environmental science degree and since then, has continued to lead in areas of environmental science, education, research and practices 3.'To be a sustainable university' is one of five key goals in the University's Strategic Plan Griffith's Sustainability Plan , approved on 5 December 2012, provides goals, objectives, targets and accountabilities to continue to advance our sustainability commitment 5.Griffith is committed to responsible investments was recognised by the Green Gown Awards Australasia GU

Information Services - Unified Collaboration - Keeping You Connected In Griffith sustainability initiative - Cisco energywise pilot ●Aim: reduce greenhouse gas emissions (C02) by reducing power consumption on network connected devices Cisco Energywise Pilot Outcome - Mixed Results ●Successfully switched off Video phones, Wireless Access Points, DMP, Clocks ●Rolled out to whole network it could save 74 tones pa + $20K pa in electricity ●Switch code was not reliable ●Caused switch faults and required a lot of maintenance support ●Constant Tweaking - University changed the library hours AP schedule had to be re-adjusted

Information Services - Unified Collaboration - Keeping You Connected Unified Collaboration Program Started in March Joining of three projects 1.Video Conferencing Room Upgrade 2.Core phone & VC infrastructure Upgrade 3.Rollout Video phones and introduce Collaboration Tools such as Webex etc Griffith Chief Technology Officer Support It is recognised that communication and collaboration is an essential part of the everyday operation and activity of a major institution such as Griffith. An integrated and easy to use set of technology tools can support an enhanced collaboration environment. Project Directive The project will begin by replacing the existing telephone system with IP video phones and seamlessly integrating them with the newly upgraded video conference rooms. This means that staff will get integrated services such as audio, video, presence, mobility, conferencing and white boarding across all University campuses Quite a challenge for the UC Program given current state of the Video Conferencing systems and that the University has five major campuses spread around Qld including four satellite locations Unified Collaboration

Information Services - Unified Collaboration - Keeping You Connected ●Started 2011 ●Aim To reduce travel between campus to increase productivity (not wasting time traveling between campuses, reduce greenhouse emissions from the University vehicle fleet, and the cost of running the vehicles ●Objective ○Video Conference meeting rooms upgraded to suitable standard in order for staff to use the technology ○Must also be consistent in experience and easy to use ○Utilise virtual meeting rooms for multi way conferencing ○Must integrate with video phones and Jabber ●Green Objective Report on Environmental and Productivity Savings ○Distance saved (in kms) ○Time saved (in hours) ○CO2e saved (in tonnes) ○Costs saved (both staff & travel costs) VC Room Upgrade Proj

Information Services - Unified Collaboration - Keeping You Connected CO2 Savings Room Example - Q Room G No of VC meetings in room per quarter = 33 Campuses: Primary = GC Secondary = NA Tertiary = LG Secondary campus Travel to primary meeting room saving = 80% x 33 = 26.4 Kms saved = GC-NA 65km x 26.4 x 2 trips = 3432 Tertiary campus Travel to primary meeting room saving = 20% x 33 = 6.6 Kms saved = GC-LG 45km x 6.6 x 2 trips = 594 Total Secondary + Tertiary campus Kms saved = 4026 Carbon Emission Savings (t CO2e) = (4026 x )/1000 = 0.8 Based on toyota corolla 2012 taken from Tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, this allows you to comparecarbon dioxide equivalent the emissions of other greenhouse gases relative to one unit of CO2 Video Conf CO2 Savings

Information Services - Unified Collaboration - Keeping You Connected Video Conf Savings

Information Services - Unified Collaboration - Keeping You Connected VC Saving Results ●In 2014 so far saved over 53 tonnes of CO2 ●If you take into consideration the staff and kms saved in 2014 we have saved $1.46M
