Community Capital Framework

The 9 th is the last day to add a course and the 15 th is the day is drop without paying tuition. Farmer’s Market today! Start reading Chapter 1 of Lewis and Conaty for next week. The outline, lecture notes, and assignments are now up on the web site. I introduced a lot of new concepts and terminology last time. Is there anything that you want to review? Today we’ll look at the concept of capital, and the different forms it can take if we expand our definition of what it encompasses. What does the term ‘capital’ mean to you when you hear it?

Did you get a chance to read the pages from Roseland on-line? Roseland argues for dividing capital for community planning and development purposes into six varieties:  natural  physical  economic  human  social, and  cultural I have prepared a handout with a brief definition of each…

How would you characterize each of these forms of capital? (will break you into small groups to tackle one each of these)  natural  physical  economic  human  social, and  cultural

Now let’s take two cases – one negative and one positive – and apply them: Detroit and the movement for a Sustainable South Bronx.

natural physical economic human social, and cultural Detroit – in the current circumstances, what is occurring in each of these categories?

natural physical economic human social, and cultural Sustainable South Bronx – with the current initiatives, what is occurring in each of these categories, at least on a small scale?

From going through this exercise, we get a sense of how each of these forms of capital are inter-related with the other forms. Is this something you have experienced in other contexts?
