Penn State Napster 2.0 Trial2 Project Description Contract signed November 5, 2003 –Centrally funded for students First phase started Spring Semester –Residence Halls only Summer Sessions –All students attending Summer Session Second phase started Fall Semester –All students at all locations –Faculty and staff for a fee

Penn State Napster 2.0 Trial3 Security Strong Policy on Computer and Network Security –Deals directly with copyright infringement –Now bans servers in residence halls Installed firewalls on 94 residence hall networks Practice –Have always suspended network access upon infringement notice or substantiated awareness –Recidivists receive deferred suspension in most cases

Penn State Napster 2.0 Trial4 Student Use Spring Semester –85% of students with that supported Napster signed up –Between 80,000 and 100,000 tracks per day Fall Semester –12,103 of a potential 72,000+ students have signed up already

Penn State Napster 2.0 Trial5 Survey Conducted a survey towards the end of the semester –Residence Hall students only –Received a little over 500 responses Will repeat survey during Fall Semester
