The colonial response
A variety of responses Protest Boycott Violence
First Continental Congress Response to the Intolerable Acts. Samuel and John Adams, Washington, Patrick Henry. Debate: Home rule under British control. Called for a complete boycott of British goods. Not a direct push for independence.
Lexington and Concord British attempt to seize a colonial gunpowder store and arrest Hancock and Adams. Emerson: “the shot heard round the world.” The war begins.
The British side Strengths Monetary wealth. Naval supremacy. Professional army. Mercenaries, Indians, and Loyalists.
Weaknesses Weak government. Weak desire to kill the colonists. English Whig party “support”. Distance & geography. Military leadership and the troops. Space for time.
American side Strengths Leadership Foreign help. (Lafayette) Style of battle. Home court advantage. “A just cause”.
Weaknesses Unorganized. Lack of unity provided by a central gov’t. Money and inflation. Supplies needed for war. No unanimous support from the people.
