Space The area in which an artwork is organized. It covers the area within a work of art, and can include the area outside of and around a work of art.
3 Components of space Space is always part of an artwork, sometimes in multiple ways. There are 3 main components when talking about Space: Positive & Negative Space Illusion of 3-Dimensional Space Linear Perspective Drawing
Positive space Positive Space is the area the object or subject actually occupies Positive doesn’t mean “good”
Negative space Negative Space is the area around the object or subject matter Negative Space supports the foreground of the picture

Notan 濃淡 Nōtan is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark as they are placed next to the other in art and imagery.
Expanding the square A traditional Notan starts out as a square You then cut out Positive Shapes and lay them down as a mirrored, symmetrical image The Negative and Positive Shapes AND Spaces are reversed
