Dystopian Literature An imaginary place or state in which the condition of life is extremely bad, as from deprivation, oppression, or terror. A work describing such a place or state: "dystopias such as Brave New World"

The United States is no more that a distant memory. Drought, famine, and war have put an end to this once great country.

In its ruins lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capital surrounded by twelve outlying districts.

The rich, privileged people in the Capital intent to keep the people in the outlying districts in line. But maintaining control is never easy so the government of Panem has discovered a way of subduing dissidents and troublemakers.

Every year one boy and one girl, between the ages of , from each of the twelve provinces are chosen by lottery to participate in the Hunger Games.

The game requires each participant to outlast, outwit and outmaneuver the other contestants… televised for all of Panem to see.

Kantniss Everdeen, the 16 year old protagonist in the novel, battles other teenagers from the various districts using her skills and wits. Survival is second nature for Katniss, who struggles to feed her mother and younger sister by secretly hunting and gathering beyond the fences of District 12 where they live.

Brutal tasks, unbearable situations, and manipulated settings test each contestant to his or her breaking point.

The only way out? In the Hunger Games arena there is only one way: kill or be killed. The last teenager left alive wins the game.

Oh, did I mention, if you are the winner… they just might allow you to live.

If Katniss is to survive, she must weigh survival against humanity and life against love. Read the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins to find out who is the last teen standing.
