Citing Sources

Why do we need to cite sources? TO AVOID PLARGASISM!

Writing a Bibliography/Work Cited Page A bibliography is a list of resources you used to get information for your report or essay. It is included at the end of your report, on the last page Or the last few pages, depending on the amount of sources.

Preparation You will find it easier to prepare your final bibliography if you keep track of each book, encyclopedia, or article you use as you are reading and taking notes. Keep track of source titles, pages used, etc. For all sources, make sure to have: full title, author, place of publication, publisher, and date of publication for each source.

Example of Bibliography Bibliography Collins, Suzanne. The Hunger Games. New York: Scholastic, Print.

What about within your essay/report?

In-text citations It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to citing. If you’re using sources beside common knowledge, be sure to cite your sources! When you cite within your report/essay, it is called “in-text citations”. Following a quote or rephrasing of any material from an outside source, you must follow with an in-text citation.

In-text Citations cont. Example: Book: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins “I volunteer!” I gasp. “I volunteer as tribute!” (Collins, 16). Following the quote we see an in-text citation. The citation contains the authors last name and page number where the information was taken from. If you happen to find a source without a author, or have two sources by the same author, simply use a shortened version of the title: (Hunger Games, 16).
