Kin Canada is Saving Lives: A National Partnership with Canadian Blood Services

Canadian Blood Services Founded in 1998, Canadian Blood Services is a national, not-for- profit charitable healthcare organization that manages the blood supply in all provinces and territories outside of Québec Operates permanent blood donor clinics up to 7 days a week in major cities Operates more than 16,000 donor clinics annually across Canada Manages OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network & the National Public Cord Blood Bank Provides national leadership and awareness for organ, eye and tissue donation 2

The Need for Blood Every minute of every day, someone in Canada needs blood. Hundreds of thousands of people each year receive blood or blood products following accidents, during surgery, organ transplants or for cancer treatments, burn therapy, haemophilia and other blood- related diseases 52% of Canadians say they or a family member have needed blood More than 80,000 first-time donors are needed this year to meet hospital demand 3

Blood for Emergencies & Surgery Internal bleeding –Up to 8 units Heart surgery –Up to 5 units Car accident –Up to 50 units Cancer treatment –Up to 5 units 4

Patients like Hunter… At just six weeks old Hunter received an emergency blood transfusion and was diagnosed with Diamond Blackfan Anemia. Receives regular transfusions. Now 10 years old. 170 transfusions and counting. 5

66 If a single donor can save lives, imagine what Kin Canada can do as a team.

77 Partners for Life is a nationwide program for corporate, government and community organizations Partners commit to donating blood as a team, year-round, to reach an annual donation pledge Provides a meaningful, cost-effective and visible way to support the community An opportunity for team building, right across the country, when members rally toward a shared, national donation goal

Kin Canada has a long history of supporting the blood system through providing volunteer support at local donor clinics. Kin Canada members are dedicated to community service and drawn to helping others. Giving blood and saving lives is one of the most selfless ways to contribute to community. There is a strong fit between Kin Canada values and the Partners for Life program. Provides an unique, non-financial way for members to contribute to the community, volunteer and fulfill service goals. Benefits of a National Partnership 8

Complements Kin Canada’s long-standing partnership with Cystic Fibrosis –Many Canadians with Cystic Fibrosis will eventually need a lung transplant, and may need blood products in conjunction with their transplant. Aligns with Kin efforts to raise awareness of organ donation –Hospital patients who receive an organ transplant often require blood products. There is a natural link to raise awareness of blood donation in conjunction with your efforts to educate Canadians about organ donation. Great opportunity for Post-Secondary Campus Clubs, since Canadian Blood Services holds clinics and donor recruitment events on many campuses Benefits of a National Partnership 9

National Goal for 2015 National partnership focuses on encouraging members to give blood and/or recruit other blood donors. We are focused on supporting existing blood donor clinics. It is not possible to schedule new clinic locations Pledge: at least 500 blood donations nationally Mid-year Results: o 245 donations = 49% of our goal o 18 first-time donors We need more members and clubs to roll up their sleeves and help reach our goal! 10

How members can get involved 1.Find your nearest clinic and book an appointment to donate Visit Download GiveBlood App Call DONATE – 24/7 2.Register for Partners for Life You can also request a form at the clinic One-time registration: once registered, your past and future donations automatically count towards our goal Invite your family and friends to join the team 11

Eligibility to Give Blood Blood donors must be: –In general good health, feeling well –Between 17 and 61* (for first-time donors). *After your 61 st birthday, contact Canadian Blood Services first –After age 67, please contact Canadian Blood Services for more info Learn about eligibility at: Donors can also speak with a Nurse at DONATE – 24 hours a day – 7 days a week – completely confidential 13

How Your Club Can Help With support from Canadian Blood Services, your club can: Organize activities that raise awareness about the need for blood and new blood donors. For example, invite Canadian Blood Services guest speakers to District / Club meetings or large events. Plan a group donation for members, family and friends to donate together at the local clinic. “Adopt a day” at the local clinic where you commit to recruit donors to fill a set number of appointments. Depending on local volunteer requirements, there might also be an opportunity to provide volunteer support for the clinic. Your club would be paired with a Canadian Blood Services staff member to help plan your involvement. Start by identifying a club “champion”. Then contact your District Champion to get rolling. See slide 12 for contact info. Plan a “What’s Your Type” event. 24 Kin members were typed at National Convention, now you can be too. 14
