Young Adulthood:
Physical Changes-Growth rates of Adults begin to slow down. Bodies begin to mature. Many young adults take advantage of their health by playing sports, taking part in outdoor activities. Mental and Emotional Changes-Many of the conflicting feelings that occur during adolescence disappear and allow young adults to feel better about life. Enjoy the independence from their family but continue to develop close relationships. Keeping in touch with family is one way to adjust to the separation young adults may feel.
Other changes include: Social Changes-Many young adults choose to marry and start a family during this time in their life. Before entering into such strong commitments, one must know oneself well- one’s skills, values, strengths, weaknesses, and beliefs. Commitment in relationships is very important. Financial Concerns-One exciting aspect is that you can work towards your dream job. Responsible for earning and spending their own money.

Middle Adulthood: Physical Changes: The body goes through many changes during middle adulthood. Middle age used to be seen as a time when your body would start to slow down. -Menopause: is the period of time in a woman’s life when the woman stops ovulating and menstruating. A woman’s estrogen and progesterone levels fall, the body’s reproductive capacity begins to slow down. -Changes that accompany menopause may include hot flashes, a decrease in breast size, anxiety, and sometimes depression. Taking supplemental calcium and exercise can decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis. -Men also experience many physical changes. As men age, their sex hormone and sperm production gradually decrease.
Other changes include: Mental and Emotional Changes-Begin to evaluate their lives. Accepting a passage of time brings maturity. A healthy, mature mind can accept changes and look forward to the later parts of life with hopeful anticipation. -Midlife Crisis: is the sense of uncertainty about one’s identity and values that some people experience in midlife. It usually begins in the person’s forties.
… Social Changes-Adults in this stage often enjoy clearer identity formation-they know who they are. They understand their role in each area and make choices accordingly. They guide their family through changes in life and take on leadership roles in child-rearing and in their job. Financial Concerns-Most adults learn to accept more responsibility during middle adulthood b/c other people depend on them for financial and emotional support. Effects can be serious-must learn to cope. Such problems may include depression, ulcers, high blood pressure, or heart disease.
… Maintaining Wellness-Leading cause of death during middle adulthood is cancer. Cancer is followed closely by heart disease as a cause of death. Adults can reduce risk by exercising, not smoking, and eating a low-fat diet to prevent high cholesterol. Receiving medical care from a physician is very important for preventing and treating problems.
Older Adulthood: Older adults-65 years of age and older. Improved understanding of nutrition, exercise, and disease prevention as well as advances in medical care. Older adults may enjoy experiences that are not possible in early or middle adult years. Physical Changes-As they age their ability to recover from illnesses or injuries is not as quick as before. Mental and Emotional Changes-More emotionally stable than they were earlier in life. Endured hardships such as death of a close friend, spouse, or family member. Come in terms with meaning of life.

Younger family members can help such as an occasional visit. -Alzheimer’s Disease: is a disease in which one gradually loses mental capacities and the ability to carry out daily activities. 1. Affects the brain and usually progresses slowly. 2. First begins losing short term memory and then long-term memory. 3. Sometime’s the patient forgets who he/she is. 4. Emotionally painful disease to patient and the family.
More Older Adulthood cont… Social Changes-Many adults look forward to retirement after age 65. Adapting to retirement usually requires time. Adapting may take a few weeks or even months. Financial Concerns-Older adults who do decide to work less or retire may find that their financial situation has changed. Planning ahead is important. Some adults may have expensive healthcare. Maintaining Wellness-Health problems are similar to middle-aged adults. Cancer and heart disease are leading causes of illnesses in adults. Maintaining healthy habits is very important.

Healthy Aging Common Concerns During Aging 1. Building a positive attitude about each stage of life can ensure that a person will care for his or her health. 2. Having a positive outlook. 3. Advancing age brings greater wisdom and, in many ways, an ability to enjoy life more than we did during early adulthood. 4. Many emotional challenges arise throughout adulthood.
Tips for Healthy Aging: Life Expectancy:- The average length of time an individual is expected to live. 1. Establish regular exercise. 2. Not smoking can dramatically reduce the risks of developing heart disease, cancer, and other diseases. 3. Not drinking alcohol decreases risk of death. 4. Maintaining a healthy body weight. 5. Lowering salt intake and keeping total calories.
