1. Environmental Protection Agency site visit EPA Audit regarding hazardous waste is Aug. 8-12; other issues related to safety are not explicitly covered but violations found will be noted. Fines (per bottle of chemicals, per light bulb, per toner cartridge etc.) are large and will be charged to the departments. That may mean charges passed on to research groups. Training is essential for all persons who work in labs; even those who do not have some responsibilities. Training for Lab users: May 11 (HSC), May 12 (SAC), May 18 (Wang), May 24 (HSC), May 26 (SAC), June 7 (HSC), June 24 (HSC). Training for non-Lab users: May 13 (Wang), May 27 (Library), June 16 (Library), June 23 (Library) for times, rooms, more info

Oral exams Oral exams are a critical part of our advancement to our advancement to candidacy requirements for the PhD. For the 102 students in the database, there are 260 examiners from the regular faculty (the rest are adjuncts). Of these, one third come from just six faculty! (Likharev, Jacobsen, Sterman, Metcalf, Abanov, Drees). This is an important duty that we all should share! Please step up and do your part. Faculty searches Astrophysics search: Sera Markoff turned our offer down. She and her significant other had offers in Amsterdam. Although we were able on very short notice to put together a reasonable possibility for her mate, it was not a permanent job and they chose to go to Amsterdam. We succeeded in generating an offer to our backup candidate, Michael Zingale, now a postdoc at the Lick Observatory, University of California at Santa Cruz. Michael has accepted our offer and will join the faculty in January Nuclear Theory search: Our offer is out to Urs Wiedemann, now on the CERN staff. Urs’ wife, Anita Lüthi is an Assistant Professor in Neurobiology at Basel University in Switzerland. She is currently second on the list for a Univ. Chicago position. Working together with the Dean and Chair of the Stony Brook Neurobiology Department, we are trying to generate an offer for Anita here. Both Urs and Anita visited in mid April, and seem very anxious to accept offers here if they can be made. Urs would not come until Jan Owing to the lateness of the season, we have decided not to prepare a backup candidate for Urs in the event he declines. Rather we would seek to re-instate such a search in the fall.
