Welcome to Year 5

Introductions Mrs Jones – Acting Head Teacher Beijing Teacher – Mr Brown Washington Teacher – Miss Bawden Teaching Assistants – Mrs Kirkpatrick, Mrs Reid, Mrs Bircham.

Independence and Organisation In Year 5 the children will be expected to show a much greater level of independence and maturity at school, and set a good example in the playground. They are now expected to be more independent with their belongings as follows:- P.E. equipment in school (Monday Games/Thursday indoor) Home School Diary and reading book in school on a daily basis. Homework set and handed in on a Wednesday. Spellings set and tested on a Monday. Named water bottle taken home daily.

Homework Homework will be given out on Wednesday. Every week your child will have a Maths and English task, with topic research work set occasionally. Reading – daily, with a comment in the Home School Diary each time they read. Spellings – your child will receive 6 spellings each week. On alternate weeks, all children will get statutory spellings from the new curriculum, the following week, the children will receive differentiated spellings. Tables facts – It is expected that by the end of Year 5, the children are secure in all times tables up to the 12x table. Your child should return their homework by Wednesday.

Rewards and Sanctions House Points through Class Dojo– for good work, good behaviour and reading at home to an adult on 10 occasions. Class cup –individual award for going ‘above and beyond’ the Golden Rules & producing a ‘Wow’ moment Golden Time – reward for good behaviour and organisational skills but minutes can be through Blue Cards!

Holidays Our school year is incredibly busy and your child will miss a huge amount if taken out of school during term time. One week of holiday every year of primary school adds up to over half of a term of missed learning! We therefore ask that you avoid taking your child out of school for holidays during term time. We are unable to provide work for holiday absence but in return neither will we set homework over the school holidays. However if you wish, your child could write a diary of their time away which they can share at school, but we will be unable to mark it. Please be aware that government rules have changed regarding holidays in term time and you may be liable for a fine.

How you can help at home Encourage independence Daily Reading Homework Topic Research Practical Mathematical activities Writing activities (e.g. read local newspaper and get them to summarise (in their own words) what they have read).

Reports Sharing your child’s targets (‘next steps’) Today your child has taken home a sheet with their current targets for reading, writing and maths. As the year progresses you will receive a copy of your child’s updated targets each half term: In November, targets will be given to you in writing during your parents’ evening meeting and you will be able to look at your child’s books to share their learning. In January, you will be invited to come into your child’s class after school to share with him/her the learning recorded in the books and receive the latest targets. In March, the latest targets will be recorded on the annual written report. You are welcome to come in with your child to share your child’s learning at this time. In May, you will again be invited to come into your child’s class after school to share with him/her the learning recorded in the books and receive the latest targets. In July, targets will be given to you in writing during your parents’ evening meeting and you will be able to look at your child’s books to share their learning.

Parents’ Evening Autumn Term - Parents’ Evening Wednesday 11th November (late) Thursday 12th November (early)
