FLT SWBAT explain that the body is organized from smallest to largest: cells, tissues, organs, organ systems

Watch this http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=level+of+body+organization&qs=AS&sk=AS1&FORM=QBVR&pq=level%20of%20bod&sc=8-12&sp=2&qs=AS&sk=AS1#view=detail&mid=FF60CC2EFDA1408BF87AFF60CC2EFDA1408BF87A

Let’s practice…

Activity! Cup Stacking Record the name of each level of biological organization on the rim of a Styrofoam cup. Spread the cups out randomly on a table and time yourself to see how long it takes you to stack the cups into the correct order. Can go from large to small, and then small to small. Practice makes perfect. Atom Molecule Cellular Organelle Cell Tissue Organ Organ System Organism

Glue notes on pg 28 Fill in all On your closed notes

Unicellular Organisms A single cell This cell performs ALL of the functions necessary to keep something alive All of the systems needed for survival are in this one cell These cells reproduce by splitting into TWO

2 Types of Organisms Multicellular Organisms An organism with MANY cells Example: All Animals and Plants and Fungi

Metaphors As we go through the lesson today we are going to make comparisons to how our body is similar to any other complex system. We are going to use our school system as a model of comparison to our body.

Organization of the Body: Cells Smallest Level of Organization: CELLS The smallest functional unit of life Cells reproduce by splitting into two. Different cells may have different jobs in the body. There are approximately: 10 Trillion Cells in the Human Body

Multicellular Organisms Cells perform different functions and may look differently from one another. This is called differentiation. Example: Red blood cells, nerve cells and muscle cells.

Metaphor: Cells = Classrooms We can think of our cells as being like the classrooms in a school There are many different classrooms that make up our school. Each room is for a different subject.

Organization of the Body: Tissues Differentiated cells of the same type can come together to form TISSUES. Tissues are groups of the same cell type that work together to do a specialized job. Bone Tissue Muscle Tissue

Our Metaphor Classes of students can be combined by similar age to form a GRADE GRADES (like 9th Grade) are like Tissues. Each grade is responsible for learning different things to make you smarter. Each grade performs a similar function.

Organization of the Body Tissues with similar functions can work together to form Organs. An organ is a group of two or more tissues that work together to do a particular job. This bone is made up of several different tissues which allows the bone to carry out its function of supporting the body.

Our Metaphor The different grades at our school each learn different things, but they all work together to make everyone a better, and more educated person An entire school is like an organ.

Organization of the Body: Organ Systems Organs with similar functions can work together to make Organ Systems Organ systems are a group of related organs that work together to do a particular job. Organ systems help living things carry out their life functions.

Organ Systems Organ systems can work together to enhance each others’ functions The muscle system and skeletal system is an example. They work together to help an organism move.

Our Metaphor: The District All of the schools in Los Angeles work together to perform a similar function: to teach all 80,000 students in Los Angeles Each school is like an organ The schools work together to form a “School System” which is similar to an Organ System TEACHERS: Update with your districts information.

Create your own analogy! Pg 29 Make an analogy of how the human body (or body of a multicellular organism) is similar to any other system that you can think of. Examples: A city, a gym, a basketball team BE SURE TO WRITE IN COMPLETE SENTENCES!
