Workshop 1 Character animation using a rig and the IPO editor

Animation Unit A series of short workshops building up to the assignment where you will choose a specific type of animation to work with and a scenario.

Learning Objective Know and understand the basic techniques of 3D character animation Learning Outcome Be able to apply techniques to create a short character animation with some assistance

Activity 1; 2mins Write the title 3D Animation in your exercise book and (with a partner) make a list of as many places that we find 3D characters, try to include some examples. Feature films Adverts TV Idents Music Videos Children’s TV Mobile applications Next gen gaming (PS3, X Box etc)

Blender shortcuts – copy these into your exercise book G= grab R= rotate I= insert RMB = select MMB = 3D view MMB + shift = pan across screen CTRL + Z = undo

You might want to set up the instructions and Blender like this on your screen; some people find it difficult having to switch all the time. Just be aware that the instructions show Blender in full screen.

Activity 2 Make your way through the tutorial – remember that this is something that you are learning for the first time so you must be patient! Try twice before putting your hand up for help

Posing the rig Open the Activity 3 file and try posing our character, press f12 to render then take screenshots and put into a PowerPoint. Name the pose.

Top tip: If you are wanting to animate more than one part of the rig at the same time (but want them to move together), you will need to select them (hold down shift and right click on each bone) and make sure you key frame while they are all selected.
