Tutor Training Based on NWP Theory Laurel Taylor

Things I learned through the Middle Tennessee Writing Project I am a writer. I am a professional. I can learn and share valuable lessons by spending time around other writers/teachers.

How this impacted me as an educator and tutor I embraced the title of author/wrier. I learned to articulate WHY what I was doing worked and WHAT the research said about my methodology. I prioritized time with other educators.

The challenges of a high school writing center Modern high schools are test-focused.  Lack of autonomy in curriculums  Always a “right” answer/format/approach

Installing my NWP principles in my tutors—You are a writer! Taking them through the writing process.  Writers’ Folders  Discussion of their writing processes  Theme for English B  We heart Anne Lamott  Metanarratives

Installing my NWP principles in my tutors—You are a professional! Read scholarly articles so they have research to back up their approaches. Use the lingo—HOCs and LOCs, Writer- Focues, etc. Tutors as consultant to teachers and classroom visitor.

Installing my NWP principles in my tutors—You gain the most from learning from and sharing with each other! Metanarrative discussions as a way of understanding other peoples’ writing process Lots of conversations about their own writing experiences Each part of the process: How we approach it… What we are thinking/doing while we write… How we receive help at that stage… Tutoring in Pairs Peer Observations Returning tutors as lead tutors
