Peer Tutoring Orientation

What do you need to do? Maintain a 3.0 GPA Demonstrate dependability, integrity, and overall good character Have received an A in the subject you want to tutor (Earth Science, Biology, CC1 Math, etc) Have mastered good study skills that you can teach to other students

How Can I Earn Service Hours? At the start of the month, notify Dr. Jones what shifts you plan to come ( or stop by) At the end of each week, service hour rosters will be sent to club advisors. NHS can’t “double-count” hours per Ms. Henschel.

What can I expect? Arrive promptly/a few minutes prior to 6:45AM if you have a Tuesday/Thursday shift, be here at 2:25PM for a Wednesday shift. Wear a Peer Tutor Badge Can study if no students show to be tutored and will receive service hour credit.

What is involved in a typical session? First 5 minutes, have a discussion or complete a short exercise focusing on the study skill for the week. 20 minutes, help with homework or whatever they want to go over. Be sure not to just tell them the answers. Last 3-5 minutes, complete an Evaluation of Services Form (Was this helpful?)

Strategies Ask what the students know already... Ask them what they can tell you from class, look at their notes with them… Use whiteboards… Provide some real-world examples… Encourage/Coach/Praise students… Start with easy examples and get harder… Establish relationships so they want to come back…
