Warm-Up Think of ways you can melt an ice cube. At your table in your small groups, come up with a list of 5 or more ideas. Make sure you and your group are using quiet voices so tables next to you cannot hear you (now and later in our lesson). There are three ways to cook popcorn. Put oil in the bottom of a pan. Cover the bottom of the pan with popcorn kernels. Place the pan on the stove and turn on the burner to medium heat. Cover the pan with a lid. Periodically shake the pan so the kernels move around in the oil. Obtain a popcorn popper. Place the popcorn kernels in the popper. Plug in/turn on the popper. Hot air will transfer heat to the kernels, making them expand and pop. Microwave a bag of microwave popcorn.
Conduction 2.Convection 3.Radiation Energy Transfer Law of Conservation of Energy- Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Types of energy. Energy changes from one form to another by these three ways. Conduction We are going to talk about energy today. Thermal, wind, solar, hydro, chemical, heat, light, potential, kinetic, 2.Convection 3.Radiation
Conduction Definition: The transfer of energy from one molecule to another by direct contact. When molecules move up against each other, they pass on energy. One ball on a pool table hits another. Hand slapping class experiment. Takes place in solid, liquid, and gases. Wire getting heated up, Hot plate with beaker experiment,
Ice Cube Experiment - Conduction Teams/groups of 2. Each group gets a Ziploc bag with an ice cube. Can only use your hands/body to melt ice cube. (Cannot use heat from mouth). You also cannot smash the ice cube to make it melt faster; has to be in one piece. (added). Estimate time with partner. Time your experiment- round to nearest minute. Write time on board. Graph your results by taking the average of the class.

Convection Definition: The transfer of energy through movement of heat by liquid (water) or gas (air). Heat moving from one location to another. Food coloring ice cube experiment. Balloon blown up and heated by a hair dryer. Show YouTube video Hair blower-moving heat… weather, different currents… mass of heat… Oven.. Feeling heat from a bonfire…. Wind currents, hot air balloon, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZe4QM_N_sw (start at 55 seconds and end at 1:08) (added).
Ice Cube Experiment - Convection Same team/groups of 2 Each group gets a Ziploc bag with an ice cube Can only blow heat with your mouth to melt ice cube. Don’t put ice cube in your mouth; keep it in the bag. You also cannot smash the ice cube to make it melt faster; has to be in one piece. (added). Stay in your seats. (added). Estimate time. Time your experiment- round to nearest minute. Write time on board. Graph your results by taking the average of the class.
What is convection?
Radiation Definition: The transfer of energy through waves. Transfer of heat without direction contact. Radiometer moving because of the heat. Magnifying glass burning piece of paper experiment. Sunburn is an example. Sunburn… tin foil with sun rays
Ice Cube Experiment - Radiation Same team/groups of 2. Each group gets a Ziploc bag with an ice cube and aluminum foil. Can only use aluminum foil and sun rays to melt ice cube. You also cannot smash the ice cube to make it melt faster; has to be in one piece. (added). Stay in your seats. (added). Make your own aluminum foil solar oven. Estimate time. Time your experiment- round to nearest minute. Write time on board. Graph your results by taking the average of the class.
What is radiation?
Review to Help Remember Conduction- The transfer of energy from one molecule to another by direct contact. Hand slapping experiment. Convection- The transfer of energy through movement of heat by liquid (water) or gas (air). Food coloring experiment. Radiation- The transfer of energy through waves. Radiometer experiment.
Graph Comparison In our experiments, by looking at the graph, which heat transfer is the fastest? Conduction? Convection? Radiation?
Wrap-Up- Independently Define: conduction, convection, and radiation. Give one example of each. When finished, sit at your seat until dismissed. When dismissed, hand your paper to Miss Carrie. 5-7 mins at least
