Distinguishing Between Action Verbs and Linking Verbs (Felt) General Lee felt confident. (tasted) The meal tasted cold to the soldiers. (Felt) The doctor felt my purse. (tasted) The chef tasted the cake.

How can you tell if a verb is a linking verb or an action verb?? First, substitute am, is, or are for the verb. If the sentence still makes sense and if the verb links a word before it to a word after it, then the original verb is a linking verb.

Example: The soldier looked tired. Substitution: The Soldier is tired. (LV)
