Predicate Nouns and Adjectives I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

So far, we have talked about objects that come after action verbs—direct and indirect objects. Today, we are learning what comes after linking verbs—predicate nouns and predicate adjectives. I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

The Subject Complement The subject complement is a noun, pronoun, or adjective that comes after a linking verb and identify or describe the subject. There are two kinds: Predicate Nouns and Predicate Adjectives. I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

Remember Linking Verbs? The most common linking verb is “to be” Iamwas Youarewere Heiswas Wearewere Theyarewere Also: be, being, been The following are sometimes linking verbs AppearFeel LookSeem SoundTaste BecomeGrow RemainSmell StayTurn I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

Predicate Nouns A predicate noun follows a linking verb; it gives information about or identifies the subject of the sentence. Remember that linking verbs act like equals signs—The subject = predicate noun. I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

Trey Songz is a singer. = Subject Predicate Noun SubjectPredicate Noun

One Direction is a band. = SubjectPredicate Noun SubjectPredicate Noun

Examples Monsters Inc. is a movie. Mike Sullivan is a monster. The Hunger Games is a book series. "Locked Out of Heaven" is a song. Rolling Stone is a magazine. I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

Things to know A predicate noun is always a noun. A predicate noun will never come inside a prepositional phrase. Unless it is a question, the predicate noun will always come after the linking verb—Subject- Linking Verb-Predicate Noun. Predicate nouns always use subject pronouns (not object pronouns)—I, he, she, we, they, who. I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

Practice: Identify the predicate noun using your dry erase board. My school is LaVergne Middle School. The newspaper staff is a collection of all types of students. Some students are athletes. I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

Why is nice not a predicate noun??? Nice is an adjective. A predicate noun must be a noun. Nice is a predicate adjective. I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

Predicate Adjective A predicate adjective follows a linking verb; it gives information about the subject of the sentence. A predicate adjective is similar to a predicate noun in that it always comes after a linking verb. The predicate adjective is always an adjective. The PA describes/modifies the subject. You will not have a predicate noun and a predicate adjective next to each other! I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

Examples Sarah is cool. Before this year, she seemed really shy. Her voice sounds really soft and quiet. However, her guitar playing has become loud. I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

My favorite basketball team is the Lakers. They were awesome last year. This year they seem distracted. They should win their division at least. Practice: Identify the predicate noun or adjective using your dry erase board. Label it PN or PA. I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.

1.Yoda is very talented with the force. 2.He is the oldest Jedi. 3.He may be short, but he is tough! 4.Yoda used to be a puppet in the old movies. 5.Now, they make him on a computer. 6.In this movie, Yoda has a lightsaber. 7.His lightsaber is short and green. 8.Why does he need a cane? Assignment 2: Underline and label the predicate nouns, predicate adjectives, or direct objects. PA I can identify predicate nouns and predicate adjectives.
