Homework Do the 15 Math Commandments Actively read the math study skills Actively read and study the arithmetic rules/ common words See if you can find all the homework by following the directions from the handout given in class. Review PPT2: Evaluating algebraic expressions Review PPT3: Distributive property

SWBAT… evaluate algebraic expressions Mon, 9/12 SWBAT… evaluate algebraic expressions Agenda WU (10 min) Evaluating expressions – 5 problems (10 min) Notes on expressions – 3 slides (15 min) Practice problems on evaluating expressions – 3 problems (10 min) Warm-Up: Introduce yourselves to your table Tell each other your name, the school you attend and what you like to do in your free time Take out the back of last week’s agenda and review the answers with your table Take out the 15 Commandments and answer each others questions on any of the commandments On the back of the 15 Commandments, write any questions you have about anything we have done in class so far (I will collect this sheet & answer your questions) HW#1: Evaluating algebraic expressions

Evaluate the following expressions when a = 2, b = 3, and c = -4 1.) a – 2c 3.) a2 + c2 2.) 4.) 5.) In your own words, explain what it means to evaluate an expression. 1.) a – 2c 2 – 2(-4) 2 – (-8) 2 + 8 10 2.) -6b / a -6(3) / 2 -18/2 -9 3.) a2 + c2 (2)2 + (-4)2 4 + 16 20 4.) 3/4a – 1/2c 3/4(2) – ½ (-4) 3/2 + 2 7/2 3½ 4

In your own words, explain what it means to evaluate an expression. My words: To replace each letter in the expression with the assigned value.

A number next to a letter means to ____________ MULTIPLY!!!!! 2 × a = (2)(a) = 2∙a = 2*a = 2a This is a multiplication sign, not the variable x

Expressions – Vocabulary An algebraic expression consists of sums and/or products of numbers and variables. i.e. x3 + x2 3xy3 + 2xyz – 4 0.10d A term is either a single number or variable, or the product of several numbers or variables separated from another term by a + or – sign in an expression. For example, in 3 + 4x + 5yzw 3, 4x, and 5yzw are all terms The variable term is the term that contains the variables. The constant term is a term that does not have a variable. The coefficient of a term is the numerical part (the number to the left of the variable)

Example: x2 + 5x + 6 Is this an expression or equation? What are the terms? x2 , 5x, 6 What are the variable terms? x2, 5x What is the constant term? 6 What are the coefficients? 1, 5

Warning!!! Always take the sign that is in front of the coefficient! Example: a2 – 4a + 3 Algebraic equation or expression: Terms: Variable terms: Constant term: Coefficients: Warning!!! Always take the sign that is in front of the coefficient!

Evaluating an Algebraic Expression P E M/D A/S 1.) Evaluate 7 + 5(x – 4)3 for x = 6 7 + 5(6 – 4)3 7 + 5(2)3 7 + 5(8) 7 + 40 47 Replace x with 6 Parenthesis first: 6 – 4 = 2 Exponents: (2)3 = (2)(2)(2) = 8 Multiply: 5(8) = 40 Add: 7 + 40 = 47

Evaluating an Algebraic Expression P E M/D A/S 2.) Evaluate x2 + 5x – 3 for x = -6 (-6)2 + 5(-6) – 3 36 + 5(-6) – 3 36 + (-30) – 3 6 – 3 3 Replace x with -6 Exponents: (-6)2 = (-6)(-6) = 36 Multiply: 5(-6) = -30 Add and subtract from left to right 36 + (-30) = 6

Evaluating an Algebraic Expression P E M/D A/S 3.) Evaluate -2x2 + 5xy – y3 for x = 4 and y = -2 -2(4)2 + 5(4)(-2) – (-2)3 -2(16) + 5(4)(-2) – (-8) -32 + (-40) – (-8) -72 – (-8) -64 Replace x with 4 and y with -2 Exponents: (4)2 = 16, (-2)3 = -8 Mult: -2(16) = -32, 5(4)(-2) = -40 Add and subtract from left to right -32 + (-40) = -72
