Chapter 1.1 It’s Alive or is It?

Characteristics of Living things 1. Living things Have Cells ex. Multicellular ( many celled or trillion of cells or unicellular- one celled like bacteria) 2. Living things Sense and Respond to Change(respond to the environment) ex. Stimulas and response 3. Living things reproduce by either Asexual reproduction(one parent) or sexual reproduction (two parents)

Characteristics of Living things continued 4.Growth and Development Ex.Change over time and develop 5. Energy Use Ex.Metabolism- breaking down of chemical materials to make energy 6.Chemicals of Life Ex. DNA deoxribonucleic acid, carbohydrates, and proteins and lipids

Where do living things come from? HAVE TO COME FROM OTHER LIVING THINGS---A LIVING CELL. A long time ago people thought things came from nonliving things through Spontaneous generation.— Redi and Pasteur ‘s experiments proved that theory wrong.

What do living things need to survive? 1.Food (different for all organisms) Autotroph- auto means self so gets food for itself self feeder Heterotroph- feed on other organisms 2.Water ( fluids for our bodies) 3. Living space-a place to live 4.Stable internal condition called homeostasis that means that the temperature for the animal must be controlled to carry on life functions

Producer How they get food Makes its own food Green in color so food is made by photosynthesis from the sun.

Consumer Eats other living organisms

Decomposer Breaks down nutrients in dead organisms

Scavenger Organisms that eat other dead organisms Turkey vulture, hyena, jackels, komodo dragon
