What do we know and what have we learned about CLD transition planning? Where do we go from here?

A test of your knowledge: Answer these questions What are examples of the multiple dimensions that define a given culture? What are words that describe how CLD families report being treated in the transition planning process? What does the term Cultural Reciprocity mean; can you describe what it looks like in practice?

Best practices for school transition professionals to engage in with CLD families Engage in skilled dialogue and culturally responsive collaboration during transition planning. Assess the knowledge and skill levels of special education and transition personnel for interacting with CLD families of youth with disabilities. Provide training to special education and transition personnel to improve their capabilities for interacting with CLD families.

Best practices continued…. Assess the knowledge and skill level of CLD families regarding transition law and active engagement in the transition planning process. Explore CLD family transition training resources in your region or local area and connect families with these resources. Develop your own CLD family transition training materials and resources.

Develop an Action Plan with these elements: 1.Current practices we are doing well. 2.Practices we need to do better. 3.Organizational change strategies to promote better practices. 4.Resources needed to implement change. 5.Timeline with benchmarks to monitor progress and change.

Epilogue: closing comments All individuals in society, including those with disabilities and those from CLD families, deserve an opportunity to complete school and experience a quality adult life. My goal in writing this book and the training I conduct is to empower everyone in the transition planning process to achieve this outcome. I hope that these webinars result in you being better prepared to continue to do the good work you do!
