Review Force and Motion Lesson 7

Congratulations! We have finished Unit 1 Force and Motion. Now it is time to review what we learned.

Take out your K-W-L chart in your notebook and as we review write what you learned from this unit on force and motion. Write it in the What I Learned section.

What is gravity and mass?

Gravity pulls any object on or near the earth toward it without touching it.

Friction is a force that is always created anytime 2 surfaces move or try to move across each other.

What is matter?

All matter has mass.

By changing any or all of these factors (gravity, friction, force and mass) will affect the motion of an object.

Let’s look at how force affects the functions of a plane.

Thrust is provided by the propeller or jet engine of the plane. Thrust acts to move the plane forward into the air.

As the plane moves forward the shape of the wing (airfoil) causes a pressure difference that exerts an upward force on the wing -- the LIFT force.

Gravity is the force that pulls objects back to Earth. In order to have an object like a plane rise higher the lift force must be stronger than the pull of gravity.

Drag is air moving over a surface which experiences friction as the air molecules rub against the surface.

Forces which affect the function of a plane.

It is possible to measure the motion of an object based on the distance it will travel in a certain amount of time.

What is the difference between velocity and rate (or speed)?

Velocity adds direction to the rate(or speed).

Rate (or speed) equals distance divided by time.

What is the relationship of position, motion, direction and speed?

If position, rate of speed or direction change it will change the time you will reach your destination.

What is an axis?

Axis is a reference line drawn on a graph (you can measure from it to find values). Here is a graph with an X Axis and a Y Axis.

A graph can be created using one axis to represent the distance that an object travels, and the other axis to represent the period of time the object is traveling.

It is easy to create a graph to help you see the relationship between distance and time.

Time is always plotted on the X-axis (bottom of the graph). x y

Distance is plotted on the Y-axis (side of the graph). x y

A distance-time graph tells us how far an object has moved with time.

The steeper the graph, the faster the motion.

A horizontal line means the object is not changing its position - it is not moving, it is at rest.

A downward sloping line means the object is returning to the start.

What is the relationship between force and motion?

The greater a force, the greater the change (in motion) it produces.

What is the relationship between mass, force and motion?

The greater the mass of the object, the less motion will occur if you are using the(same) force.

Force equals Mass times Acceleration.

If one part of the formula changes it will affect the outcome.
