Literary terms inference: combining what you know with what you read to analyze a story point of view: vantage point from which a story is told first person point of view: narrator is in the story- uses pronouns like "I, me, my" third person point of view: narrator is not part of the story- uses pronouns like "he, she they" *omniscient point of view: narrator knows thoughts and feelings of many characters *limited point of view: narrator knows thoughts and feelings of main character only theme: meaning, message, insight, or moral a story reveals irony: difference between what is expected and what actually happens allusion: when an author refers to a person, place, or event from history or a famous book that he expects the reader to know summary: a brief retelling of a story or event that states the main idea and supporting details and is in one’s own words

Frank went home to his wife and told her about how he got Charlie drunk and ditched him. He didn't feel at all guilty. The next day Charlie had a bump on his head and decided not to drink anymore. 5. Miss Kinnian ran to the ladies room. She couldn't believe how cruel Charlie's co-workers were. When she returned, Charlie told her about how the TV contraption was frustrating him. 6. I liked having Charlie in my night class for slow readers. 7. Joe Carp sent Charlie out to buy a newspaper and ditched him. 8. Dr. Strauss feels inferior to his colleague Dr. Nemur. Dr. Nemur has a wife who is only concerned with fame and money. He feels like he never will make her happy.

Linking verbs- special kind of verb that links the subject of the sentence to a word that describes or renames it. Think of it as an = sign! Bill is sad. Is it a linking verb OR not? 1. Charlie is a student in Miss Kinnian's class for adult learners. 2. Charlie takes three tests before he is chosen. 3. Charlie feels so excited when he is chosen for the operation! 4. Charlie was really scared. 5. Charlie thinks the operation might hurt. 6. Charlie grows agitated when he isn't instantly smart. 7. Charlie stays at Donnegan's Plastic Box Company. 8. Charlie's co-workers are not nice to him. 9. Miss Kinnian becomes Charlie's private tutor. 10. Dr. Strauss appears in Charlie's room with a gift: a TV contraption!

They would use a phrase “to pull a Charlie Gordon” as an insult. 5. Charlie finally can beat Algernon at the maze! 6. Do his co-workers get him drunk and ditch him? 7. Charlie learns grammar, but he might confuse his punctuation again. 8. Joe and Frank have a party and invite Charlie. 9. Next, Charlie’s “friends” were cruel at the party. 10. Charlie realizes that his friends have been mean to him. 11. Charlie is feeling ashamed. 12. Have his friends been making fun of him all along?

Before reading 1. Locate your inference arrow and go to page 323 Report Discuss with your partner what an inference is (Forget? See notes from 9/26/13) During reading 1. Read all of Report 11 silently. 2. As you read, put your inference arrow where you made an inference. After reading 1. Grab a slip of paper from the front table. Put your names on it (one slip per group). Find an occurrence of one of the themes on the bulletin board and record it on the slip of paper. Be sure to put the theme (friendship, love, acceptance, treatment of people with mental challenges in society) on the paper. 3. Submit slip to bin. 4. Now, with your partner, record six key plot events in your summary packet. 5. Write your summary of report 11 in your packet. 6. Grab your homework “Point of View Switch” from the front table. Start it.

10/3/ Types of Writing Narrative Objective: To write a story using first person point of view Bellringer: 1. Choose a key or best scene from the story so far. Record it in your notebook. EX: Charlie races Algernon and wins! 2. Now pretend you are any character from the story except Charlie. Write two to three sentences from that character’s point of view (first person) about his or her reactions to the scene. EX: (Burt) Charlie has been losing against Algernon the lab mouse for ten weeks now. He gets so frustrated, I know. Last night when we were running the maze test, Charlie won for the first time! He jumped up and down, knocking over my coffee. The smile on his face was ear to ear!

Action, Linking, or Helping? 1. Charlie is getting smarter every day. 2. Charlie will start learning college subjects next week. 3. Charlie had the ink blot test again. 4. Charlie discovers that he was quite feeble-minded before. 5. Everyone at work seems frightened of Charlie. 6. Charlie was given a bonus for helping line up the machines. 7. Charlie notices how beautiful Miss Kinnian is. 8. Miss Kinnian is only 34! 9. Miss Kinnian tells Charlie to be patient. 10. Charlie says that he is in love with Miss Kinnian.
