The stuff you should know but if you don’t, here is a refresher……. Measuring The stuff you should know but if you don’t, here is a refresher…….

Measuring in Half When you take a whole and split it in two. Written like this: 1/2

Measuring in Quarters When you take a half and cut it in half or a whole and split it into 4 parts. Written like this: 1/4

Measuring in 8ths When you take the 4ths and cut them in half, split the whole into 8 equal parts. Written like this: 1/8

Measuring on a ruler Each line signifies a different measurement. Make sure you simplify your fractions.

Simplifying Fractions 4/8 can be simplified because both numbers can be divided by 4. As a reduced fraction it will be 1/2. 5/8 cannot be simplified because neither number can be divided by the same number. Same thing with 7/8 Hint: All the numbers will be at least reduced by 2

Lets Practice Here is a ruler broken down into its different parts 1 inch 1/2 1/4 1/8 1 2 3 4

Lets put it together now Here is the same ruler. Now lets go down the line and decide what length I am pointing to. 3 ½ inch 2 1/8 inch ¼ inch 5/8 inch 1 3/8 inch 2 ¾ inch 3 7/8 inch 1 2 3 4

Measuring Number your paper 1-5 and then as the ruler comes up write how big it is. At the end we will be checking them and you will get a quiz grade for today.
