Teaching students about the electrical system in cars. The language focus is on communication and therefore the students are required to have a conversation with the teacher as a final task. Back to Overview

The lesson uses both oral and written exercises, on the subject of electricity and the electrical system. Texts are taken from a number of books. Back to Overview

The students will be required to obtain and share information in English. They will also have to write a report about electricity. Key words and language specific vocabulary related to electricity and mechanics are highlighted in provided texts. The tasks also give the students an opportunity to use this terminology in a practical communicative situation. Scaffolding is used throughout tasks. Back to Overview

The lesson plan involves looking at electricity from the scientific point of view as a mechanic. Many students have had lessons in electricity from school. The activities enable the students to apply their knowledge and communicate it verbally with classmates and teacher. The final task requires the student to apply his knowledge of electricity to a practical problem with a car. Bloom’s Wheel Bloom’s Wheel – Using this tool the lesson should provide the student with opportunities to use both HOTS as well as LOTS. Back to Overview

CAN DOs: Read a technical text in English Explain a part of the electrical system to a group of peers Describe and perform a simple procedure on a car (Test the alternator and battery, replace an alternator) Document the procedure (Write a report) Describe the electrical system and how to troubleshoot for problems to a ‘customer’. Back to Overview

The students will be able to talk about their chosen profession in English. Some of the language learnt in this lesson can be transferred to other aspects of a mechanics job. Where there are several terms for the same part the teacher should be prepared to point out where these terms come from (slang/Am. Eng/Br.Eng etc…). Back to Overview
