Mass Collaboration

Mass collaboration 1 Mass collaboration is a form of collective action that occurs when large numbers of people work independently on a single project, often modular in its nature. Such projects typically take place on the internet using social software and computer- supported collaboration tools such as wiki technologies, which provide a potentially infinite hypertextual substrate within which the collaboration may be situated.

Mass collaboration - Cooperation 1 Mass collaboration differs from mass cooperation in that the creative acts taking place require the joint development of shared understandings. Conversely, group members involved in cooperation needn't engage in a joint negotiation of understanding; they may simply execute instructions willingly.

Mass collaboration - Cooperation 1 Another important distinction is the borders around which a mass cooperation can be defined. Due to the extremely general characteristics and lack of need for fine grain negotiation and consensus when cooperating, the entire internet, a city and even the global economy may be regarded as examples of mass cooperation. Thus mass collaboration is more refined and complex in its process and production on the level of collective engagement.

Mass collaboration - Online forum 1 Although an online discussion is certainly collaborative, mass collaboration differs from a large forum, list, bulletin board, chat session or group discussion in that the discussion's structure of separate, individual posts generated through turn- taking communication means the textual content does not take the form of a single, coherent body

Mass collaboration - Coauthoring 1 This interdependence of collaborative sites coauthored by a large number of people is what gives a mass collaboration one of its most distinguishing features - a coherent collaboration emerging from the interrelated collection of its parts.

Mass collaboration - Business 1 In the books Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything and MacroWikinomics-Rebooting business and the world, Don Tapscott and Anthony Williams list five powerful new ideas that the new art and science of wikinomics is based on:

Mass collaboration - Business 1 In the financial industry, companies such as the Open Models Valuation Company (OMVCO) also employ mass collaboration to improve the accuracy of financial forecasts.

Mass collaboration - Non-textual mass collaboration 1 Most "anonymous" folk songs and "traditional" tunes are also arguably sites of long term mass collaboration.

Mass collaboration - Business 1 In the financial industry, companies such as the Open Models Valuation Company (OMVCO) also employ mass collaboration to improve the accuracy of financial forecasts.

Mass collaboration - The role of discussion 1 It is of course debatable that discussion is optimal, as most (if not all) mass collaborations have discussions associated with the content being developed

Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything 1 'Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything' (ISBN ) is a book by Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams (author)|Anthony D. Williams, first published in December It explores how some company (law)|companies in the early 21st century have used mass collaboration and open-source technology, such as wikis, to be successful.

Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything - Concepts 1 The difference however is that instead of an organized business body brought into being specifically for a unique function, mass collaboration relies on free individual agents to come together and cooperate to improve a given operation or solve a problem

Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything - Concepts 1 The book also discusses seven new models of mass collaboration, including:

Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything - Concepts 1 * Peering: For example, page 24, Marketocracy employs a form of peering in a mutual fund (Ticker Symbol: MOFQX) that harnesses the collective intelligence of the investment community...Though not completely open source, it is an example of how meritocratic, peer-to-peer models are seeping into an industry where conventional wisdom favors the lone super-star stock advisor.[ WUhErZgmpoCpg=PA24lpg=PA24dq=marketocracy+ wikinomicssource=blots=i8SZ2y6jOlsig=sTfY4k8q5rvK mWq7aSToxE5uT8khl=enei=VElzSqTkBcuWlAei0sDX Cgsa=Xoi=book_resultct=resultresnum=3#v=onepage q=f=false Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything, 24.]

Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything - Concepts 1 * Ideagoras: For example, page 98, linking experts with unsolved research and development problems. The company InnoCentive is a consulting group that encapsulates the idea of ideagoras.[ =- WUhErZgmpoCpg=PA24lpg=PA24dq=market ocracy+wikinomicssource=blots=i8SZ2y6jOls ig=sTfY4k8q5rvKmWq7aSToxE5uT8khl=enei =VElzSqTkBcuWlAei0sDXCgsa=Xoi=book_r esultct=resultresnum=3#v=onepageq=ideago rasf=false Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything, 97.]

Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything - Concepts 1 * Prosumers: For example, page 125, where it discusses the social Video Game Second Life as being created by its customers. When customers are also the producers, you have the phenomenon: Prosumer.[ WUhErZgmpoCpg=PA24lpg=PA24dq=marketocra cy+wikinomicssource=blots=i8SZ2y6jOlsig=sTfY4 k8q5rvKmWq7aSToxE5uT8khl=enei=VElzSqTkBc uWlAei0sDXCgsa=Xoi=book_resultct=resultresnu m=3#v=onepageq=prosumersf=false Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything, 124.]

Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything - Coase's Law 1 A firm will tend to expand until the cost of organizing an extra transaction within the firm become equal to the costs of carrying out the same transaction on the open market.Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything, 56

Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything - Coase's Law 1 A firm will tend to expand until the cost of carrying out an extra transaction on the open market become equal to the costs of organizing the same transaction within the firm. Thus, the authors think that with the costs of communicating dramatically dropping, firms who do not change their current structures will perish. Companies who utilize mass collaboration will dominate their respective markets.
