On your new first left page, answer the question above in your own words. Why do people (or teams) win?

What advantages did the two sides have? Americans = PatriotsBritish = Redcoats Fighting at home Motivated to win to protect homes and property Knew the land = best routes and places to fight. Many patriots owned rifles and could shoot. George Washington’s leadership. Trained and experienced troops. Guns, cannons, and gunpowder. Best navy in the world. Many colonists (loyalists – often wealthy) supported the British

What disadvantages did the two sides have? Americans = PatriotsBritish = Redcoats Poorly organized and untrained troops. Few cannons, little gunpowder, and no navy. Few colonists were willing to join the army for a long time. No navy Loyalists made up about 20% of the population. Not at home Send soldiers and supplies several thousands of miles Enemy spread out Less motivation to win Always at risk of being attacked. Had many enemies (France)

Now follow the directions and complete the soldier activity! Pretend that you are a soldier at the beginning of the war. Based on what we have discussed, answer the questions below: 1. What would they say about the war that was beginning? 2. What would they say about their opponent? 3. Why are they fighting in this war? 4. Who do they think will win this war and why?

Use info from the notes: Why do you think the Americans won the war for Independence? Write your response on the back of your left page and turn it in for a grade!
