Chapter 6

I can analyze the growth of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai kingdoms including trading centers such as Timbuktu and Jenne, which would later develop into centers of culture and learning.

 Ghana was the first great trading empire in West Africa.  It rose to power in the A.D. 400s.  It was located in an area covered mostly with grasslands, stretching across north central Africa.  Farmers in Ghana could produce enough food because there was fertile soil and they knew how to make iron tools.  Due to its location between Sahara salt mines and gold mines near West African coastal rain forests, it became an important crossroads of trade.

1. What did Ghana’s people make that helped them be successful? 2. What two resources were important to Ghana? 3. How did the Ghana empire become rich? 4. What new religion did traders bring to Ghana? 5. How did the empire of Ghana end?
