Where do you think this building is located? For what do you think this building is used? Mystery Place Built in the late 1400s

Elmina Castle I cannot believe you aren’t going to tell us what this building was used for!!! How are we supposed to wait???

Patent What is a patent? A patent is a license (usually from the government) giving a right or title for a certain amount of time, usually granting the sole right to exclude (stop) others from making, using, or selling an invention.

Think Alouds Work Great For This…

Analyzing The Patent Sail anywhere they wanted under the flag of England. Investigate any island, country, or region including those areas where non-Christians lived. Claim any town, city, castle, island, or mainland for England. Conquer, Occupy, & Possess any of these places. This patent gave John Cabot and his sons the right to:

What predictions can you make from analyzing the patent? Consider: How did England view itself? How did England view other peoples?

Europeans Truly Believed… That European Explorers had the right to take over any place they discovered. That if a European Explorer planted a flag in an area, than they automatically owned the land (regardless of who was already living there). That Europeans were superior to (better than) any of the people in the lands they were exploring.

European exploration led to encounters between Native Americans and Europeans.

Encounters between 2 groups of people often result in exchanges.

Each of the 4 quotes on the “Exchanges” page in your journal represent a different primary source. Read each quote with a partner and determine what was being exchanged.

Khan Learning The Exchange Of Products The Exchange Of Animals & Wild-Life The Exchange Of Ideas What is being exchanged?

The Exchange Of Diseases Europeans brought Small Pox.

The exchanging/trading between the Three Worlds is referred to as The Columbian Exchange.

Analyze the quotations from Columbus’ Journal. Read each quote in order to determine what types of exchanges were made between Columbus and the Taino.

The Taino & Columbus The Taino traded willingly with Columbus and his crew.

The Taino & Columbus The Taino Traded: For: Parrots Cotton Spears Bells Beads

Columbus Thought… The Taino would be easy to capture and would make good slaves. It would be easy to convert the Taino people to Christianity.

The Truth About Columbus

He captured some of the Taino people and took them back to Spain. He wanted to show the Europeans the kind of slaves that he could bring back from the New World. Why?

During his first voyage, Columbus had limited interactions with the Native American people. He returned to Spain with a handful of trade goods and… 6 Kidnapped Taino men.

gold Columbus promised the King and Queen of Spain that the New World was full of gold and that he would return with as much as they wanted and as many slaves as they desired.

During his second voyage there was much more contact between the Europeans and the Native Americans. Columbus was unable to find gold, but he did not return to Europe empty handed…

He enslaved 1,600 Native Americans.

Columbus took 500 Native Americans back to Spain, where they would be sold as slaves… Only 300 survived the trip.

Later, many more Native Americans were enslavedforced to work enslaved and forced to work in silver and gold mines in the Caribbean.

Native Americans living in what is now Haiti, were ordered to collect a certain quantity of gold and silver every 3 months. When they turned over the gold, they were given a copper token to hang about their neck. Native Americans found without a token often had their hands cut off.

Sugar was later introduced as another way for the Spanish to make a profit.

More Native Americans were enslaved and forced to work on sugar plantations.

Soon there were not enough Native Americans left… So the Spanish turned to Africa …

African Slavery is a direct result of Columbus’ explorations.
