Supermarkets

Which supermarkets do you know? In your teams try to identify these supermarkets. Which country are they from? Do they have stores in China?

Supermarket Shopping In your groups try to name 10 of these things you can buy at a supermarket: Vegetables Fruits Drinks Cleaning products Sweet snacks Cooking utensils Meats Items of clothing Other items

Supermarkets in your country What are the most popular Chinese supermarket brands? Do people in your country prefer supermarket shopping or going to the local market? What foreign companies are there in China? Which are better: domestic or foreign? Why? Are their some things you can get at one supermarket but not others? In future which companies do you think will dominate the Chinese market? Why?

Group discussion What are the advantages of supermarkets over small shops? What is your favourite supermarket? Why? Do you think supermarkets are good for the economy? Why or why not? Are they more or less expensive than small shops? Is convenience the most important factor when you are shopping? Is there enough competition amongst supermarkets? Do you like looking for bargains when you go to the supermarket?

Further discussion “The big supermarkets are destroying the jobs and lives of small business owners and they are taking the community spirit out of shopping!” Do you agree or disagree with this statement from an angry shop owner? Why or why not?

Role play Student A is the customer. You want to know how much all your shopping is and you want to get a discount and ask about special offers. Student B is the checkout assistant. You process the customer’s shopping, give them the total price, tell them about special deals and why your supermarket is the best.
