CHAPTER Sharing of Soft Resources

Chapter Objectives Provide an overview of soft resource sharing Describe the method for placing a soft resource for sharing and removing the same from sharing Discuss access controls to limit access at the file level Illustrate the mapping of drives for sharing Use as many screen demonstrations as necessary to highlight the practical side of soft resource sharing

Chapter Modules Initial Notes on Soft Resource Sharing Placing a Soft Resource for Sharing and Removing the same from Sharing Limiting Access to Individual Files Removing the Hidden File Attribute Mapping of Drives for Sharing

© N. Ganesan, All rights reserved. MODULE Initial Notes on Soft Resource Sharing

Module Objectives Shareable entities Disk, directory and file sharing case example The concept of share name Viewing share name on the network Access control Demonstration of share name view and access control

Shareable Entities Entire disk –Independently Directories –Independently Files –Within the context of the directory in which they reside

Disk, Directory And File Sharing US Canada Mexico Directory Directory/ File Disk NAFTA

The Concept of Share-Name Each resource (directory) is shared using a name The name can be the same name as the original resource (directory) itself

Share-Name View on the Network Canada (Root Dir.) Trade (Sub-Dir.) Rules (Shared Sub-Dir.) Canada (Peer) Rules (Shared Sub-Dir.) Local View Network View

Access Control Without password –Read-only –Full Change, add or remove With password –Read-only –Full Change, add or remove

Demonstration of Share Name View and Access Control

Module Objectives Case example for directory sharing Placing a directory on the network for sharing Specifying share name and access control Demonstration of placing the resource on the network for sharing Steps for removing Tariff from sharing Demonstration of removing Tariff from sharing

Directory Sharing Case Example US CanadaMexico Tariff Directory to be shared. Rates A file in the directory. NAFTA

Placing the Resource on the Network for Sharing Open the Explorer in the Computer named US. Right select the subdirectory named Tariff. Select Sharing. Specify share name and access control.

Specifying Share Name and Access Control Sharing Share NameAccess Type Read-OnlyFull Depends on Password Read-only Password Full Access Password Select One 12

Placing the Resource on the Network for Sharing: Demonstration

Steps for Removing Tariff from Sharing Open the Explorer in the Computer named US. Right select the subdirectory named Tariff. Select Sharing. Select Not Shared End OK

Removing of Tariff from Sharing: Demonstration

Module Objectives File sharing limitation in Windows peer-to-peer networks Limiting access to selected files Case example for limiting file sharing Steps for hiding the file named Rules Demonstration on hiding the file name Rules

File Sharing Limitation in Windows Peer-to-Peer Sharing Access to files cannot be individually controlled in sharing The lowest level of access control is limited to directories –All the files in the directory thus become shareable automatically

Limiting Access to Selected Files Store all the files to be shared in one or more separate directories designated specially for sharing –This is not always possible Hide the files in the directory that are not shared –Also assign read-only access control to these files

Limiting Access to Files Files S1, S2 and S3 F1 F2 F3 F4 Separate shared subdirectory. Files S1, S2 and S3 F1 F2 F3 F4 Hidden files with read-only access. Method 1 Method 2

Case Example for Limiting File Sharing Rates (Shared) Rules (Hidden) US (Tariff)

Steps for Hiding the File Named Rules Explorer Trade/ Rules Properties Select Attributes Read-only and Hidden End OK Right Select

Hiding the File Named Rules: Demonstration

Module Objectives The multi-step process Steps for removing the hidden file attribute on Tariff Steps for removing the read-only and hidden file attributes on rules Restoring hidden file attribute to system files on Tariff Demonstration of removing the read-only and hidden file attributes

A Multi-Step Process First, remove the hidden attribute on all the files in the directory using the explorer view Select the file named Rules independently and remove the Read- only and Hidden file attributes Reestablish the hidden file attribute to system files

Removing the Hidden File Attribute on Tariff ExplorerTariff View/ Options Show all Files OK Next Slide

Removing the Read-only and Hidden File Attributes on Rules Properties Deselect Attributes Read-only and Hidden Next Slide Right Select Previous Slide OK Select Rules

Restoring Hidden File Attribute to System Files in Tariff From Explorer choose Tariff View/ Options Select Hide files of these types OK End Previous Slide

Removing the Read-only and Hidden File Attributes: Demonstration

Module Objectives Definition of drive mapping Mapping drives illustrated Notes on mapping A case example for drive mapping Steps for mapping a drive Demonstration of drive mapping

Drive Mapping Defined A resource on the network is mapped to a local drive –By assigning a drive letter A logical drive is thus temporarily created at the local peer corresponding to that network resource

Mapping of Drives a: Floppy c: Local hard disk d: Local CD-ROM e: Logical drive a c d e a c d Logical disk Mapped disk Requesting to share the resource Resource available for sharing

Notes on Mapping Resources that could be mapped: –Drives –Directories Different procedures can be followed for drive mapping A mapped drive can be disconnected as well

Drive Mapping Case Example US CanadaMexico Tariff Shared directory. Map

Drive Mapping Steps My Computer Map Network Drive Select drive letter. Specify network path to resource. Path is //US/Tariff End OK

Drive Mapping: Demonstration
