Will RDA Mean the Death of MARC? The Need for Transformational Change to our Metadata Infrastructures Christopher Cronin Director of Metadata & Cataloging Services University of Chicago Library LITA/ALCTS MARC Formats Interest Group 08 January 2011

 Will the introduction of the new RDA code be the event that helps precipitate the demise of MARC?  Will RDA require the description of content and functionality that cannot be accommodated by the MARC formats, or that can be more easily accommodated by alternative content formats?  If so, what format(s) will replace MARC?  And if the MARC formats do continue to thrive, how will they have to change to accommodate the new content descriptions in RDA? Will RDA Mean the Death of MARC? LITS/ALCTS MARC Formats Interest Group ©2011 Christopher Cronin Agenda

 Only if we want it to.  The Web holds all the cards.  Need for broad cultural changes to accompany our technology changes.  But who will do the hard work? Will RDA precipitate the demise of MARC? Will RDA Mean the Death of MARC? LITS/ALCTS MARC Formats Interest Group ©2011 Christopher Cronin

 URIs, not literals  Significant resources for training and DBM  Examples: copyright date and publication information for reproductions What will RDA require? Will RDA Mean the Death of MARC? LITS/ALCTS MARC Formats Interest Group ©2011 Christopher Cronin

“Having not been a part of the effort to create MARC those many decades ago, I cannot imagine what conditions fostered its birth. But in my ignorance I imagine that the opportunities created by computers inspired Henriette Avram and company to rise to the challenge of recreating our professional infrastructure in a revolutionary and farsighted way. We would do well to look to our past for the inspiration we need to create a future that our descendants will look upon with similar amazement.” -- Roy Tennant, “A Bibliographic Infrastructure for the 21 st Century,” Library Hi Tech 22 (2), 2004, pp Will RDA Mean the Death of MARC?
